how to stream from a NAS?

For the last few years I've been streaming my music from a NAS to a Chromecast Audio, then from that optically to my DAC.

I'd like to update this system a but so I can connect by USB to the DAC. What is the best way to do this given the NAS is in a different room to my system?

I've been using Bubble UPnP app on my phone to select music from the NAS.

Audio OS for RPi: Moode Audio, piCorePlayer, Volumio... to name just a few

Not DIY but the Yamaha WXC-50 is cheap and cheerful. Can work as a pre or a source and has COAX and Optical outputs but no USB out.

Controlled via the Musiccast App which works well.

Why do you want to use USB rather then TOSLINK?
