For the last few years I've been streaming my music from a NAS to a Chromecast Audio, then from that optically to my DAC.
I'd like to update this system a but so I can connect by USB to the DAC. What is the best way to do this given the NAS is in a different room to my system?

Yes, perhaps. I do have a Raspberry Pi board, need to look into creating something with it...
Not DIY but the Yamaha WXC-50 is cheap and cheerful. Can work as a pre or a source and has COAX and Optical outputs but no USB out.

Why do you want to use USB rather then TOSLINK?
