how to hook up a 5" LCD video module

Hi everyone!

I am attempting to build an LCD projector based on this website:

http://www.geocities.com/zark5150/projector.html

I have already acquired a Delta IV lens from eBAY and a 5" LCD video module from www.partsexpress.com.

However, I have no idea how to hook up the 5" LCD to work with a VCR, a DVD player, or a camcorder. The LCD did come with a separate piece: a red wire, a black wire, and a RCA connector all connected to a piece that snaps into the side of the LCD. How do I use this?

Plus, what do I take off from the back of the LCD. I can pull down the top piece that is connected to the ribbon cable, but there is another piece underneath.

If anyone can answer one or both of these questions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I do not have the same lcd, but i have taken them apart... The lcd screem itself is like a piece of glass you can look though. From what i see on the picture, what you will want to do is first remove to steel frame on it. You may need a small drill bit unless it is held on by screws. After that you will want to remove the backlighting... which sould only consist of sheets of plastic and a light. What you should have when you are done is (what looks like) a piece of glass connected to the circut boards and no frame.

As for your problem hooking it up, how you worded it sounded kind of vage... Sounds to me like you just have to plug in (or solder) the connector.

I have the same LCD, hookup is pretty straightforward:

RCA connector goes straight to your video source. Any VCR, DVD player, camcorder, etc should have an RCA (composite) output. If your DVD player only has an S-video output, you can find S-video to composite adapters at various electronics stores for 5-10 bucks.

The additional bare red and black wires are used for power. For a power supply, you just need a 12VDC AC/DC converter that puts out at least half an amp (500mA.) You can find these easily for around $5, I used this one: http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=search&item=DCTX-1216&type=store. It will probably come with a barrel connector on the end of it, you can either snip that off and determine the polarity (whatever you do, dont reverse the polarity when hooking up the display, you'll probably destroy it), or go the lazy route I took and solder the positive (red) wire on the LCD into the center of the barrel connector, and solder the ground (black) wire onto the outside ring of the connector.

And that's it, you should now have a working display. As for the removal of the boards/backlight, I haven't stripped mine down completely yet, but it looks like you won't need any tools other than a small phillips screwdriver to remove the the circuit boards from the frame. Just make sure to be very careful with the ribbon cables, they're awfully fragile. Might be a good idea to unplug them before you start dismantling and plug them back in once the display and boards are mounted in the projector case.

Hope this helps.

switch

the panels i used had switches, but most headrest build in panels don't
they activate through a car set up and that is pretty neat....

like you have 2 screens : one in the front-sunvisor or dashboard of the car and one in the back
as soon as the car starts driving the front one will stop functionning and will restart as soon as the car comes to a halt, that excludes however info on roadtraffic and mappping because then it will keep it's power and display....
that is why those built in for headrest and sunvisor usually don't have switches (i presume)

For now I'm just using a power strip to turn the display on and off (my project is still in the infant stages), but you could easily wire in a little switch from your friendly neighborhood Fry's, Radio Shack, etc between the power supply and the display. Of course if you're using a PC AT power supply, that takes care of the on/off switch right there.

Quality

What is the quality of images like from these LCD's compared to the larger ones? The images on Zark's site don't look that hot compared to other's I have seen. Anyone know the reason for this? Are Projection Panels really the best way to go? They are getting way to hard to find (high res ones at least).
