Basically I just want a digital output to feed into a separate DAC? If so, do many disc media drives have an S/PDIF output on them which can be fed to a DAC.
Has anyone used a SATA drive to make a CD/DVD transport?
I have researched and there are kits out there to use older IDE drives

I mean a sata cd rom, a sata to ide converter and then the cd rom controller.

Good point this should work? I will investigate
This is my CD ROM. The driver is an old ASUS IDE (10$).!!! For standard CD audio is perfect… I have added an coaxial INPUT to its internal DAC for the signals coming from an external media player. Bye

I had a drive with SPDIF out, just TTL level instead of strict SPDIF electrical spec but it works.
What's important is that it has a play button so it works without a computer. Just apply power.
