How to build the F5

Sorry folks, no progress.

I need to run out and get a 3rd meter, I haven't had the chance yet, hopefully tonight??

Speakers - That's a good question, as I'm currently in-between having good speakers, and have my old standbys, a pair or Dynaco (SEAS) A25. They might not do all the audiophile stuff, but they sure play nice music...

I have been very seriously considering one of the Troels Gravesen designs, the '3W-Classic' and might have those fairly soon. My Ariels, of Lynn Olsen fame, are gone due to a small house and WAF. So it gives me an excuse to make another project!! 🙂

What do you guys recommend for speaker binding posts / rca jacks?

I got these huge connex speaker binding posts, but it's not threaded all the way - and I'd need to use a washer or spacer (which stinks)...

So, I'm shopping for new pairs...

I'm using Cardas CCBPL binding posts. I would prefer the short version but it's what I have around. There appears to be enough thread. Also using Cardas RCA's with the nut on the outside because I have them around and they look nice. I just got a Neutrik Powercon power inlet and plug.

Ok. I was asking cuz I need some "inspirational influence" myself. I am thinking Audio Nirvana speakers with F5 (if I manage to get a hold of the boards before their sold out, though), but also both trouls and humblehomemade have decent designs. This one in particular caught my interest:Humble Homemade Hifi

I got to the store and bought a 3rd meter. (And a 4th, as they were 5 bucks each...) Yes, they are not that good, but they are good enough for what I need.

As fas as I can tell, I don't have enough bias range, and need to change the resistor in paralell with the pots... But I could be totally wrong...

With 0 offset, I can only bias to .15v 🙁

With .6 bias, the offset is .3v 😱

Ideas?

my question is : in that post referred to earlier where the op said he couldn't bias higher than ... and NP replied to change resistors , the op never mentioned anything about output offset . he just stated that he couldn't get the bias voltage up high enough . is your problem the same problem with the same cure ?

one needs to be a Spiderman , to chase ya all , in all F5 related threads , filled with same issues ......

thing is it's very much appreciated that you do . seems most of the knowledgeable folks have gone into hibernation , yet you still are here for us newbies .

i mostly just muddle along learning figuring things out for myself , which is cool , but sometimes it's nice to have some guidance .

thanx bud

my problem is that with the heatsinkusa 10.08 x 7 heatsinks that i'm using they won't heat up past 40c biased at .62 😉

after the heatsink thread debacle , i pretty much had it . too bad . folks could be building these amps using heatsinks that cost $75 inc shipping .

6l6,

I'd like to offer you more than moral encouragement and a few witty remarks, but I was lucky--had an F5 that fired up without much drama. Besides that, with my very limited F5 experience, I think moral encouragement may be the best I can do.....

Have you been able to get both legs, in both amps, up to 0.6v bias? Are you seening the same (or about the same) output DC offset in both amp channels? (and both of the same polarity?)

Ken Mod......

Yeah, Woody..... I'm believing we might have gotten "death by a thousand graphs" on heatsinks, too. Like you said, real data ought to always pre-empt theory and conjecture. My Conrad heatsinks continue to run cool, as well, at about 0.61 bias. P.S. ... Ran tests today in our power development lab at work--appears my 400VA Antek transformer may be (ahem) "slightly overspec'ed". But still, I LOVE the sound. I don't know how vigorously I'll pursue that transformer issue, further.

thing is that i'd bought 4 of these sinks figuring on having to use one for each output (mosfet) because someone had computer modeled it and someone had said no way , then flg said after testing these in a different serario that just one 6" piece would do for one channel , i just had to try it .

and low and behold . the "experts" were wrong 🙂

Yep......Woody..... Agree

But look at it this way--you've already started collecting the hardware (heatsinks, at least.....) for your second F5 build.....!

As for me, I think I've bought out all the allen-head stainless steel machine screws and bolts (and aluminum spacers) my local Ace Hardware stores had in stock. (You KNOW you're spending too much time at "Ace" when other customers come up to you, to find specific fasteners!)
