id like to build a sub without spending too much money- say under 150. i just talked to a guy in the local hi fi store, and he said id get better quality if i went ahead and built it myself, rather then settling for a 150 model. also, id like to try it. anyway, i am completely new in the dyi field, so any help would be much appreciated
go to www.diysubwoofers.org
Check out descriptions of the different kinds of subs. Check out the sub projects. Check out the links at the sub projects links.
What are you using the sub for? What size subwoofer(s) are you looking for? If you plan to spend $150, I would think you should look at some of the subs and sub amps they have on ebay, under home audio.

hmmm, interesting, ive looked into that, but id really like to try building a sub. anyone know how to do that? what should i look out for as far as parts and such, where should i get them and so on?
A couple of questions
So what do you want to use it for?
How large a sub are we talking here?
$150 is not much if we need to include an amplifier.
For $150 (If you have something to act as a sub amplifier)
you can take a long throw 12" woofer, (an Adire Audio Shiva, or the like) Place it in a sonotube, plug the ends with mdf. And add a vent.
There you have it great bass. The best way to make endcaps would be to cut 2 circles of MDF, one that just fits inside the tube, and the other that is flush with the outside. Glue them together, then glue them into the tube.
If you have a bit more money, and are able to have something larger, the same can be done with a 15" long throw woofer, (like an Adire auido Tempest.) This would be worth the extra money, and will totally kill, almost any commercial sub.
2 would be even better.

im using it for music, classic rock, movies, punk, metal, jazz, everything pretty much. im not really sure what youre tlaking about- the long throw stuff and all that, could you break it down for my into at least semi-laymans terms, as i said, im new to this.
I didn't say not to build a subwoofer.
I told you to check out those links and see what you like and how to build a sub.
There are 2 parts you need that will cost you substantial money sub and sub amp. You will not get a good amp and sub for $150, the only place I know where to get stuff real cheap such as you want is ebay. I just bought 2 sub amps for $150 for both. I could sell you one, I only need one.
Or you can buy some good subs and sub amps if you look around on ebay. Otherwise you might want to spend more money. You could also go to a place that sells really cheap subs like radio shack or something, which I wouldn't recommend. First you kind of need to learn about subwoofer though.
Also a sub for movies is different than a sub for music. Sub for movies are mostly vented and loud, quantity more important than quality. A sub for music can be vented or sealed, I prefer sealed and mostly 15" subs, but for classic rock, metal, jazz, punk most people preffer a smaller sized sub. The sound quality of 15's doesn't bother me like it does some people and rap sounds weak on most 10's and 12's.

Ok here it is step by step
So if you want it spelled out for you.
Here is a fellow that documented some of his sono sub projects in great detail. There are dozens of these types of projects out on the web.
