I don't recommend using resistors: you loose regulation, and this means the screen voltage will be pulled way south at maximum output. Besides that, any lower screen voltage than as before will require a rebias, and maybe even a different load impedance for maximum power output as well (not like that will make much difference anyway though).
Agreed, and I wouldn't use zeners either. A glow diode with an RC bypass works better and will be quieter.
EL34 vs. 807
According to TDSL in SE mode as a pentode:
11.5 watts for an 807 with 500 V supply and a 6K transformer
11 watts for a EL34 with 250V supply and a 2K transformer
According to TDSL in SE mode as a triode:
807 not listed in this mode of operation.
6 watts for a EL34 with 375V supply and a 3K transformer.

Update
My first encounter with the 807 amplifier I purchased left me with a sick feeling in my stomach which resulted in my sending the amplifier back to the manufacturer for repair.
I just received the amplifier back the other day. My first impressions were good until I started to push the little devil.
What had started out to be somewhat sweet sounding turned like a spoiled stepchild. Distortion and a crackling noise resulted from within. At this point in time I was prompted to do a power test to see what I could find out. The results didn't quite live up to the telephone conversation I had with the engineer/builder. I was promised over the phone that the amp was going to deliver 9-10 watts output. I actually got around .7 watt into an 8ohm load.
Having remembered that someone had mentioned that I sue for false advertising I drafted a rather heated email to that effect. I received a reply to pack it up and notify them and they would send a call tag for it.
I think that with the guidance and help here I can build something much better.

After letting this amplifier go years ago I have always wondered if I could build a SE amplifier like this one that would be capable of not only more power but maybe a little sweeter sounding. I would like to use a 6SL7 and 6Sn7 and 807 as my tube line up.
Anyone have any ideas?🙂
