Hopefully, after next week, I'll find the time to get back in the shop to complete my Quartet 15. Build thread here.

I was also given a pair of homebuilt speakers the history of which is unknown. The boxes are solid but fugly. Largish 2 way vented using Vifa P21WO-12 and Vifa D25TG-75. The network, by appearance, was custom designed for it but it was built into the back of the box. I have to look through the driver opening and can't get a good enough look at it to document it's components or layout. I'd like to bring these to our next gathering for evaluation. To me, they do not sound as good as my RBRs (something not quite right with the highs) so I'm not sure if building a new box for them is worth the effort.

I recently purchased an Eton 8.1 kit from a friend of Gowa's but these are not likely to be ready until next spring. Should be well worth listening to from what I hear. Hopefully they will be well worth looking at too.

Hi Guys,

Lunch on Oct. 30th would work for me. East Side Mario's is also fine by me.

GOWA:

Great looking TM you've got there! I personally use Speaker Workshop for doing measurements and crossover design, but I only really use it because it's free. If you're willing to drop some cash, I've heard great things about SoundEasy.

Just the same, I always suggest trying the free option first, to see if you can really justify the expenditure. Measuring loudspeakers in the home is definitely not an easy task, so it might be better to learn the ropes with minimal investment, and if you feel like the software is holding you back, then spend the money on something better.

I've got a few different projects on the go right now, so we'll see what I have done by the next meet. I'm just starting a group buy for an I/V stage intended to work with a Buffalo II DAC, so that should be done by the time we have a get together. Otherwise, I always have plenty of goodies hanging around I can bring.

Cheers,
Owen

I'm finishing up the second channel on one of the "ebay treasures" that I brought to diy ottawa last time we met. it's the one that uses LME49810 with 5 pairs of outputs. The transformer is a bit small, only +/- 63 volts DC, 160 watts or so per channel but it will drive the 2.5 ohm load resistors no problem execept it get s hot hot hot.

Unless there is an influx of posts in the next couple of days, I'd say there is a general lack of interest in the Ottawa area for a large gathering. What happened to all those folks last year that complained about the day, or the time, or the place we picked? Not much point in renting a hall for four or five people.

If someone still want's to get together for lunch on the 23rd or 30th I'll be there but I'm not sure there's much to discuss regarding a GTG/Demo.

I was able to attend most of the last get together. The quality of construction of the diy equipment was fantastic. Sounded pretty good too! I went home and cried after looking at my home made stuff. But I don't care, I'm a real man who eats quiche and can cook it too. I know people are better at construction than me so as long as I am happy with the results I can sleep at night. Seeing the other guys stuff inspires me to do better next time. I was wondering that maybee some of the Ottawa diy members are a bit intimidated and may be a bit shy to bring their stuff or they don't have the expert knowledge that some of the guys have. We are all hear to learn so lets get together and learn. No one in my family cares or understands why I make my own stuff, so it's really really nice to talk techie to other guys. I am tired of talking to myself and some members of the family are questioning my sanity. I must stop moving my lips.

I personally am very interested in the talk as well. It's not like most of us have someone as technical around home to discuss with. As far as the build quality, I know I don't have the knowledge/experience/tools to compete with the casework I've seen in the photos, but it's (almost) all about the sound for me anyway.

Another great reason for getting together for me, is that I've never really heard any equipment that I haven't owned, as very few of the people I know are into music much, so I have nothing to compare my stuff to, and thus my goals are rather random and often dropped before completion. If I heard something I really liked, I could set that as my next goal and I would be much more inclined to follow through on it.

Oh, and to make sure I'm on list, mark me down for two (not joking, the wife is coming with).

haha! well, I only wish I could make quiche as well as I build stuff, and my stuff is also quite crude. when I start to make a design and think well I could have the metalwork done by this place, have it silkscreened there, and make a nice overall design, I usually start working on something else!
anyway you are sane, and usually people who are not as creative wonder why others do these things. We'll all be in the same room with peers at this meeting! I really hope I can attend. I could bring my Magnat Ribbon 7 speakers...

and my stereo 6AS7G (JAN tubes) single ended amplifier... If I get it done in time!
