What is your opinion on how low a tweeter can be played?
This question is specifically related to the PE buyout on Onkyo tweeters and my line array project. 🙂
These tweeters have an Fs of 4200 Hz, and I want to go as low as possible (below Fs if that was possible). What happens at Fs?
I believe the following circumstances might pay a difference:
1. I will use ~50 tweeters per channel, therefore they will get very little power each.
2. I use a digital active filter (dcx2496) so I can use steep slopes and can EQ eventual pikes
3. I can mount the tweeters in a simple waveguide (I know this has an effect, but not really why)

I probably cant answer your question, but for anyone to be able to, can you state (if known) their Xmax, power handling, and what max power per driver you would feed them?
Also how low you'd * like them to go . . 😉
Also, I was unable to look at it the one time i tried, but iirc there's a line array forum at audioroundtable. there may be someone there who's done such a thing

See the specifications from PE below. Xmax is unknown. I would like 2500 Hz and up, but I doubt that being possible (?)
I don't really know how much "real power" actually gets to the tweeters when playing "fairly loud" with my "100 watt" amplifier, but my guess is no more than 10 watts per channel. This would mean about 0,2 w per tweeter.
Is it theoretically possible to include Fs in a usable range?

From the pictures on PE it's hard to tell if it is a dome or a cone design. If it is a dome, at 3/8" of an inch the radiating surface area is limited such that relatively large excursion would be needed to reach down into the mid-range band.
Regardless, with such a small voice coil, limited power handling and low-ish sensitivity, this driver seems unsuited for 'crossing low'. High Fs could point to a relatively light membrane, or stiff suspension, or both. Either way, crossing around 6000 Hz seems reasonable. As you move lower in frequency toward Fs, distortion will rise. In fact they may be recommending 6 kHz because of distortion issues above Fs as well.
Having said all that, it might be an ok tweeter for high range use. At that price, might as well get a few to test out. Do you have any test gear? It would be interesting to see how they perform. I would recommend against buying a big whack of them, however, as they likely will not be suited for your needs it seems.
