After a nice soak with Servisol Super 10 the hum and crackle on the volume pot has gone. The left speaker sounds great but I think the balance pot is beyond saving. As you see it 75% over to the right before I get balance and the right speaker is a bit muffled but not bad.
It could be speaker, it may be going. If I turn the balance all the way to the right and crank up the power its loud.
But the balance pot is loose.
I'm thinking I need to replace it, what do the tech's think?

I agree I do have a spare 650A that had the case damaged but it works fine. Its also remote controlled. I like the retro look, but as you say the old electronics are now 45 years old. And I have a set of TDL speakers that the coffin has rotted but the cones are in good condition. Save me having to drop an 8 ohm speaker to a 10 ohm.. I think it may be the way forward tbh

I understand this is about the volume pot or the balance pot but I have to interject something here. I really enjoy the look of old audio equipment because quite honestly it was just about the joy of having the sound come out of the device and again it looks absolutely stunning and in my opinion quite beautiful.

there are times where I kind of miss that manufactures usually used to put their heart and soul into a product and let the designers Run free and left the engineers to figure out what they could with what they had to work with.

in my opinion I kind of miss the Aesthetics of speakers versus the actual performance.
a piece like this is absolutely breathtaking and I like it's absolute quirky nature of being a coffee table at the same time.

I think this is inspired me to just go ahead and make some speakers just for the hell of it I just look good and to hell with the sound as long as it's adequate I think I'm fine with it but in fact I think that's what most Bluetooth speakers are today anyways.

as far as electronics are concerned, I guess if you really don't have any care for it then of course go ahead and keep the visual elements and replace Electronics in the back end.
I'd seal them up and keep them in a closet someplace but absolutely you can replace all this stuff will keep them all the visual cues in place and looking quite nice by the way.

realistically everything could be replaced inside of this with something just a little bit bigger than a box of cards. I would keep the incandescent lights however to maintain look and I think that's about how I would go about it.

I wonder if the speakers are in relatively good condition?
