How expensive can an Econowave be?

That’s not my speaker or what I’m building. The point was a 16 inch waveguide shouldn’t be going that low. I’m sure the JBL cmcd will be better than any 2 way using a 1 inch compression driver for low end pattern control and it will hand off high enough to allow the use of the radian 475 at a frequency that is far cleaner for quality highs.

This is all just like... my opinion man...

I feel like the Econowave was inspired by a lot of the mentioned 2 way monitors but done in a way that was meant to Economically add a Waveguide to a speaker, and it kind of grew from there into an ongoing project others approached in a similar fashion using more esoteric drivers etc. Component Creep we will call it.

Now with where we have taken things, it seems there is a blurring of lines between what constitutes an Econowave and a Large Format 2 way speaker. The terms sometimes get used interchangeably by some. While one may be the other, the other isn't one sometimes... If that makes sense?

with a 1" +12" and a 1.2-1.3khz crossover your still never going to get good mids regardless of drivers. its just too big and heavy, in a 3-4way most people try to use as small and light as possible (within reason and effeciancy)
built the gainphile s15 years ago and regardless of what i did mids were flat and carbord-sounding.. there are drivers that are better ofcourse but imo its never going to be "good" compared to a 3-way or a larger horn with 500-800hz crossover.
The JBL 2206 is very good up to 1200hz.

Yes agreed. Take a large advent take out the tweeter cut a hole for a horn or drop on top. That's how it started. Building a DIY 2 way from scratch not the same thing.

Good point! That’s where I think I wanted to go with the thread. I have a set of Econowaves in the Advent boxes. I don’t know if I would call them large format, maybe medium? Over the years lines get blurry (in more ways than one) and technology moves forward. My thought for a high dollar “Econowave” is a world class horn tweeter in a waveguide, a world classwoofer up to 12” (because larger wouldn’t fit in the Advent box) and then four amplifiers and DSP. Having said that, some think two woofers can act as one and should be included, some think larger 2-3” tweeters should be included, and of course larger woofers should be included to ensure Altec 19 fans get their due.

It’s all very interesting to see what people come up with especially the high dollar no holds barred artist inspired systems and technological show boats. Also, I love the 15” two way format.

The B&C 15 that Geddes used along with the SEOS 15 and a BMS 4550 is a great combination.
If you don't need super deep bass, the B&C 15's can make great notes at 35hz. I have the BMS 4550 and it is not strained to be crossed at 950 or so.
