I finally stripped down a 15" Samsung 512N last week. It was on sale for $208 after tax and a mail in rebate. I pulled the trigger after I saw the nice price and other postings on how easy it was to open up. It was indeed pretty easy to work with after I found the right way to open up the shell.
So, my setup is the Samsung 512N and an Apollo AI-1000 OHP. I will try my AI-2000 OHP after I cut and reinstall the FS mirror.
My room arrangement is hardly adequate, so my results aren't too good. However, I would like to know what I can do to maximize the quality. Right now, there is an issue with light leakage into the room. Since I'm trying to raise the LCD an inch above the top of the OHP, light starts to leak there.
If I built a 1" frame to sit be/w the OHP and LCD, would the heat be too much? Would using laptop fans be adequate to push heat out of the frame, and if so, how would I power the fans?
The AI-1000 has a monstrous fan which is loud. Is there anything I can do about that?

I took various pictures as I dismantled the LCD. If you want to see them, they are at http://www.overlunch.com/images/mrgadget/ohp_lcd .
FYI: that's just a directory listing, and they aren't in a usable order. I'll get to that later.

Here's what i did for a temp unit till i get my new projector built. It's just corrugated plastic from Rona and duct tape. 😉 And the lcd is 1"off the ohp with 2 1" pieces of wood.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Build a shield to prevent light leaks (painted black on the inside).
Add quiet 120mm computer casefans in the right places.
Convert the halogen bulb to a metal halide one of 150-250 watts(+add a new lexan UV filter under your LCD). Less heat, better color index, more visible light.

Cooling tip!
This is a really useful tip that has served me well over the years - I tried to post this to its own thread, but I keep getting the "Use the Search" dialog... 🙁
(NOTE that this tip is primarily for U.S. readers.)
Buy 230VAC cooling fans from electronics surplus stores - they're cheap and don't require a 12VDC power supply - wire them into the main power switch. When running at 115VAC they run very quiet. (CFM is reduced, but I've never found it to be inadequate.) They last forever, too.

Not sure what you mean

This is the second time I saw this suggestion and it sounds like a great one except for what you mean by 'cooling fans'. Do you mean like would be used in an industrial/large office building for moving air. Is there a specific type of fan called a cooling fan?
Sorry if it seems a bit dense.
thanks

Nothing special about this kind of fan - looks just like all the others you see in picture of people's projector projects. Only instead of being a 12V DC fan, it's a 230V AC fan.

Thats amazing, the price is about what you can get a good used PC PS fan for and they're new! I may get a dozen or so just to put in small places for circulation. I still haven't built a projector but noise from fans will not be a problem since I currently live about 200 yards from train tracks and a block away from a fire station. I've gotten so annoyed because of the noise that I stuck my head out the window and said: "Let it burn, I never liked those people anyway!". A few people think it's funny. Anyway untill I move noise is not a big problem. The "white noise" from fans helps to soften the more annoying noises from outside. Oh yeah, I am staying here right now because the rent is very very low. Thanks for the info.
