how can i build a Choke?

Hello there, is it possible to wind my own choke for a power supply? im looking for 6-8H of inductance and a few hundred ohms, it needs to be able to withstand a curent of about 250mA. what sort of guage wire will i need? and how many turns will i need?, i can get hold of parts such as a core, bobbin etc. but is there a calculator or anything i need to follow for it to work and get the specifications i need?
