how can I add an avatar

You can upload an avatar in your control panel. If you failed to do that recently, try again, there was an issue with the BBS that has been fixed.

To help the next user: to access the Control Panel you have to click the "Private messages" link, under the user name.

It is "direct" only if you see it -in the middle of 15 irrelevant menu items.
One obvious usability "rule" is that relevant information should be put together. In this case, that is inside the box with the user name and the user information, and/or on the user name link as most users expect this, used to other forums. The info "You last visited: Today at 06:06 AM" is redundant. It could be put there, or after expanding the box to make room.
