How are these bass units for a high efficiency system? Eminence EMI-1550/Fostex FW405

Already thinking of a high efficiency project not much after my other 3 way build. 😱

Anyone have experience with this bass driver?

Hi,

I would assume it does what it says on the tin, i.e. its a subwoofer.
You would definitely need response graphs to use it any higher.

I bought the EMI 1550s without response graphs (since they probably don't exist), and to my surpise, they are flat !!! to 1.6 kHZ, and then roll off very nicely. No need for a low-pass filter at all. No break-up peak at all.

If I was going to use them in another project, I would use two for the bass, and one for ther midrange. I have listened to them as a midrange driver (yes!), and they are amazingly smooth but detailed, with great dynamics.

I've just read some unfavourable reviews of the EMI 1550s used as subs. I should emphasise that I am using them open-baffle where I only get down to 30 Hz, (Fs of 24 Hz) which is fine for me, but may not meet others expectations.

Hi,

Well if they are flat and well controlled into the midrange its probably
best to regard them a as a large high efficiency driver bass driver
rather than a subwooofer.

Qts at 0.23 is low, as is Fs at 24 hz, but Vas is massive at 500L/18cuft.

Decent compact subwoofer they will not make.
The Vas / Fs indicate a lightweight cone, needing big boxes.
They are arguably suited to open baffle with lots of bass boost.

I remember looking at these for a sub..

-they are best suited in this application (as a sub) to a compound isobarik config. (to lower vas), in about 5-6 cubic feet sealed enclosure placed in a room corner (operated from 40 Hz down depending on room dimensions).

Such a configuration should give an excellent extreme low freq. response that is also subjectively very detailed.

I missed D OB G 's posts! He had told me about these drivers in open baffle via email. Certainly a driver to know more about. I'd love to hear one.

Maybe it was measured at 1m on an open baffle?
I see this a lot, and have always just assumed that was the case.
