i saw an ad in the newspaper about 15" plasma with a contrast ratio of 3000:1 in the affordable price segment
now how different is plasma from lcd. even it has to be backlit which would mean a candidate for diy projecter.?

plasmas arent made in that size... "plasma" has become a name associated with flat panel tv's, not necessarily the technology itself.
secondly, plasma is bad for pj for many reasons. its NOT transmissive. so, you would have to just reflect off of it. secondly, the smallest to my knowledge (i do this for a living), is 32".
basically, its like a flat tube crt. you COULD drive it really hard, use a fresnel lens, project off of it like those "100" screen things you see on ebay. but, that would really hurt the panel over time, and of course it washes stuff out.
there is no backlight to a plasma panel. in addition, they are pretty heavy, use a lot of power, big, expensive, etc etc etc. stick with an LCD panel for projection.
