An MLTL is a mass loaded transmission line. Essentially, you've got a pipe, with a reflex port or passive radiator attached to it, which uses quarter-wave resonances instead of the usual Helmholtz resonance of regular vented enclosures.
Bears some similarity to the "bass-tunnel" you mentioned... but using a different taper.
