Hornflower 2-way point source

I have doubts about 4" drivers in the 100-200Hz range.
The SB12PAC25-4 have 5mm Xmax, should do about 109 dB at 1meter per box without a strain.

For fun, I substituted in four B&C4NDF34 with similar Xmax over three EV MTL-4 (quad 18") on one side while outdoors tuning up a line array, hit around 86dBA at 75 feet (23 meters), crossed at 160Hz.

TNT, the Hornflower is smoking!

Much agony over how to proceed with the building of the enclosure progress grind to a halt. But forming the net to sculpture the casing with concrete-clay is the decided way forward. In includes perhaps use of whole wheat :) Its gonna be messy... :)

These was my outcome for a bid on an OB in concrete... I will revisit this at a suitable time. I know what I did wrong :)

Unfortenantly this is how deep the WG may sit into the flower... well well,,,, next version...

Spiders apparently moved in :)

Ok, one standing up - barely :)

Obviously I was fooled by the easiness of the 3D program and made a stand that is very hard to realise - so at my first trail to raise the creation, the "head" nodded downwards like grandpa in a TV sofa after dinner.... fail. I made a quick fix reinforcement and now it can stand up but I dont trust the ting so I have a few security precautions installed. Listening to mono I'm not so used to but some impressions are clear for me; - dynamics is almost troublesome - these where supposed to be "easy listening" speakers - not so at all. Clarity... Webb space telescope resolution here - ohh, what did you do dear sound engineer.... directivity - I like wide dispersion speakers - why did I build these... ok, to get the previously mentioned treats... cool! I'll play.

Sound stage in mono is very stable and focused. Good thing aslo is that varying frequency bands stay at same place in the portrait. >no jumping around and well detached. Satisfied and promising.

Fantastic intelligibility - a very nice treat that I look forward to consume... great!!

I started off playing the thing laying on the floor, as I had no working stand... first evening time flew and I had the first knock from the apartment below at 00.30 in the night - oops. The thing is very "intense" and energetic even at low SPL it seems. Tight, firm and clear. Bass lines very easy to follow - maybe its 3rd and 5th distorsion... must measure...

When mounting the bass drivers they didn't fit - couldn't get them to reach the baffles due to that they grounded on the top concrete - the whole structure had sunk while drying apparently. I needed to chip away pieces with a chisle to take away with 2-4 mm of the concrete to make the basses fit. It went fairly OK on the first one (turned out it wasn't really enough in the end...) but on the second unit I came through and made a hole :-/ - off to the repairs..

I will exchange the wood for a steel U beam for stability. If I can make it rusty it will be fine for astetics :)

It seems to have someting desirable so I will finalise the project for sure. The came out little bigger than anticipated.. see what I'll do about that when I do the real pair ;)

PN measurement in listening position. EQed. XO=1,6k 4th... I think one can see that the 4 bass units makes for a rocky FR but after 1,6k, it's a smooth ride... moving my head sideways do change the sound but not excessively soo...

No more nodding off g-pa! :)

Invested (yikes - had to pay 100€ for 2 pcs of 55cm rectangular tubes) in steel for sturdiness.

Now for mending the hole in the second speaker...

your pink noise measurment to me indicates a need for some EQ as it must sound quite bright? I get this kind of result using pink periodic noise and the moving mic method in a domestic living room (carpet, soft furnishings) using constant directivity speakers:

I like the gold horn but the concrete 'flower' seems to not astheticly fit to me, perhaps a smoother finish?

Yes I know - EQ will be redone for sure and you where right - it was on the bright side. The rough look of the flower is ok for me. I think the steel part will be better than the wood and will give a more "polished" presence. I can for sure see why this don't jive for everyone - I'm not sure yet myself :)

Your measurement is at listening position?

@kipman725 that curve you've shown is a near exact copy of the Toole "trained listeners" preference curve.
Is that accidental or intentional? I use that exact curve to get a base-line after finding out it was "that close" to what I had grown into
over a long period of testing EQ preferences, long ago. It just sounds natural... Long ago @mitchba mentioned it in a review he did, as he too was close to that curve with his speakers. Here we were, oceans apart, yet zooming in on the same preference... (about a little over one third down on that page)

Your curve vs Toole:

thats kind of uncanny! I suspect actualy that curve is post EQ and I misslabled it. My normal target at home is:

20 8.829695786
25 8.829695786
30 8.829695786
35 8.018092456
40 7.315049674
45 6.694921991
50 6.140198876
55 5.63839078
60 5.18027588
65 4.758851024
70 4.368672551
75 4.005425082
80 3.7
100 2.5
125 1.3
160 0.6
200 0.2
250 0
1000 -1
32000 -6

which has more low end. I found this data which shows a lot more energy >300Hz which is my uncorrected response:
