Can it be done sucessfully, or is it any use in fact? I just started thinking about it because the TL at the rear gets smaller as it goes along, sort of the opposite of the horn at the front.
Circlotron:
Transmission Lines and ported enclosures share many design features. An unstuffed Transmission Line has an impedance curve similar to a ported box's.
Wasn't the Altec Voice Of The Theatre horn loaded in front for mids and ported in back for bass? I believe there are several other designs that are horn in front, ported in back.
I would think that if you can do that, you can do a Transmission Line in back to substitue for the ported chamber. After all, the Bose Sound Cannon substitutes two tuned columns for the two ported chambers in a sixth order bandpass enclosure, and it seems to work both sonically and commercially. I would think you could swap a Transmission Line for a ported chamber in most cases, if you have the time to work out the details.

Hi Circlotron, all
A bit like the Tannoy Westminster ?
It has a front horn and a back "horn".
Never heard it , but it is supposed to sound very good.
With a transmission line instead of a back horn there will of course be different
sensitivity between the front horn and the back transmission line,
a bit of equalisation would maybe take care of that.
Sounds like an interesting idea
cheers
