I'm a newbie to this forum and not exactly sure where to post this. I'm Jason. I'm new to the speaker BUILDING world. I've been an audio/video guy for 12 or so years, but recently I've been interested in building an iPod docking station. I have a decently educated ear and appreciate Hi-fi systems. Here's my 1st attempt at building a system from scratch using car component speakers and the rest of the parts are from parts-express.com. I wanted to create something that provides exceptional sound quality, AND, achieve a high SPL when necessary. This docking station has 2 separate volume controls. One is for the front speakers which is intended for SQ. The second volume control is for the side speakers, which was designed to create sound quantity (for the backyard or even for a party). Here is the build process. I spent around 70 hours. The only things missing in the pics are the handle, which is centered on top, and the middle port which matches the actual sound ports. It serves a way for air to get the amp. Any questions please feel free to ask!

at casull. it's not frosting haha its wall compound to seal the mdf. it's a technique i've done to achieve an even looking finish with spray paint.

Very nice setup. How do those cadence components sound? I was thinking about playing with a pair a while back. Mostly cause it uses same idea as the dynavox with the oversized voice coil. And they have an asthetic apeal. If they sound good i might have to get a pair. This build has inspired me. Thank you. Great worksmanship.
thanks newWorld! the cadence components sound great and you are correct, the oversized coil is a hit, but requires juice. the highs are detailed and non fatiguing with this setup. the tricky thing about these components is, i know they can handle a lot more power...at least 150-200watts rms. with 100 true watts rms going to each channel they provide a surprisingly pleasant listening experience. since they are 5 1/4" the bass extension is not as low as i am used to, but granted i am accustomed to crazy amounts of low end. for the above average ear these components will impress if the application is created by an experienced user.
