Since these were on sale at Madisound and I’ve always wanted to try em, I grabbed a pair. I put them in .5 cuft sealed test boxes in the studio with a 100hz hp filter to let em break in a little for a day and then sat and listened to just them in the nearfield………all I can say is simply stunning!!!!!!. There is timbre and clarity that should not be for $50…….I’ve got Revelators that don’t sound as good as these. I’ll follow up with measurements in the coming weeks.

Approx 400-1000hz sounds exceptionally clear to me……vocals are scary good.

And about a year ago the 8-ohm version was on sale for $36, and I still passed them up. (Sad cat) 😿
I would think about using them without a crossover, the roll off is so smooth (as Paul Carmody said 11 YEARS AGO!)

@Andersonix - Yeah, I was going to point to that too! For those who don't follow external links, Paul said in 2014...
@mayhem13 - thanks for posting. I've looked at these many times over the past years and saw when they went on sale this time, but I just don't need more drivers. BUT...I may have to buy some now.
"This driver is awesome. We should all be sent to bed without dessert for not using it sooner....But really the purpose of this post is not to publish another design. If you like the Spitfire, great; if not, move on. What I'm here to say is that the HiVi L6-4R is an awesome woofer, and the DIY community has been missing out by not putting it to good use!" Why? Without out some context this comment is not helpful.I prefer the F6 to the L6.
I never worked with the F6 but I have had a lot of other Hivi drivers and I’m convinced of something…..whoever heads their design team for woofers must really voice everything to the limit…….none of them have ever disappointed for the moneyI prefer the F6 to the L6.
can’t say the same for their tweeters though 🙁
I suppose I need to reinforce why. The F6 does not subdue or glaze over details in the mix, whereas I feel the L6 does. The L6 is a more benign/neutral sounding driver whereas the F6 is more realistic or engaging. However, the F6 needs some attenuation in the 800-900Hz region or it will sound honky. The L6 does not suffer the same blemish.
…….and maybe that’s not my experience with the L6 due to the high pass filter?…..personally I’ve never considered 6” class drivers as woofers……there’s just not enough surface area to move air without significant compromise. The L6 currently strongly appeals to me as an extreme value as a midrange driver to pair with a pair of eights, tens or a single 12 or 15.
Is this the midrange used in the von schweikert one speakers? Do they also use dayton reference woofers?
Yes, the L6 is used with a pair of RS180, and (now) a SS Beryllium tweeter. When Endeavor Audio released these to the public, they didn't yet have the SS tweeter. Von Schweikert bought Endeavor and continued to produce the tower with the new tweeter.
Dang a $50 midrange and $60 woofers in a 27k speaker. I really wonder how many speakers they sell.
@Socaleddie …..which kinda makes my point…..this Hivi driver is pretty stunning for the price. I have the Scanspeak 15m and it doesn’t sound as good as this L6. I have found over the years that boutique drivers don’t often live up to the promise…..but there are exceptions.
I wish I had the B&W 800 series mid on hand to do a side by side…..I understand that’s one of the finest sounding drivers around. I have heard a few full 800 systems and didn’t care for the overall voicing…..but that’s a subjective thing…..like vodka or gin.
I’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would dislike the L6 though from 200hz out to 3k…….so far I can’t point to a single objection. I spread them out into a mid field triangle yesterday to see how they image…..not really fair as there’s no tweeter/crossover phase anomalies but these are presenting a deep and wide soundstage.
