so i'd have to change the 14v to 57v to run a 100w system? now how is dc voltage changed? I know how they change ac voltage... is it the same concept? You guys are great, some small things are finally starting to make some sense... I KNOW WHAT RMS MEANS NOW!

Yes a 57 VDC supply gives

28.5x28.5(2x4ohms)= 812/8= 100 Watts into 4 ohms

Say you need 2x30 VDC or 60 VDC

You need a STEP UP, DC-DC CONVERTER
which makes 12 VDC 5 times higher

/halo knows about lots of STEPUP ICs on the web 😉

LT1070 High Power STEP UP regulator

HV trenta THK (2250$)

Potenza nominate 4 - 12V 2x300 W (RMS)
Potenza continua 4 - 13.8V 2x320 W (RMS)
Potenza continua 2 - 13.8V 2x600 W (RMS)
Potenza continua 1 - 13.8V 2x1000 W (RMS)
Potenza mono 4 - 13.8V 1220 W (RMS)
Potenza mono 2 - 13.8V 2000 W (RMS)
Sanaa passante (-3 dB) .5 Hz - 180 kHz
Distorsione - THD 0.1 %
Fattore di controreazione 6 dB

I had it in my hands! VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!😱

so lets see if i can make a verbal schematic. I have the input, and my 12v supply.
I would then use the dc-dc step up to make it say 60v. (30v swing) From there i power some sort of amp (say transistor since i'm familiar with that..even though i know it sucks) which the output of that one transistor would power my 200W max speaker. (i say 200w max because then i know that i wouldn't over kill my speaker) would that work. I would imagine to get the amp to work at a certain range say 20hz to 100hz amp i would put a filter in before i amplify the signal. is that somewhat what i would need to do?

1. hehe I like that.. 🙂
2. Well.. +-30volts Just as easy... (if you use a transformer in the circuitthat it)
3. I personally would use an IC amp.... And there is nothing wrong with transistor.. 😛
4. Active crossover.. 🙂 yeah, that would be the best idea... can we assume this is for a sub?? 🙂
5. umm.. yeah.. 🙂

immeraufdemhund,

The big problem with "cutting your teeth" on a car stereo amp is that the power supplies are going to be very complex... They use switching type supplies that run at a high frequency. You have to generate a frequency, and then step it up through a transformer, and then rectify it... this is just a very basic explanation- it's a whole lot more involved than that.
Not to pee on your campfire, but I would look at building a home amp first, and then think about a car amp.
