In my summer car i have a Nakamichi Car stereo with a 5 disk changer in the trunk. the problem is that this is an older model of cd changer. I bought it new but it sat on the shelf for many years before it got put into the car. and it was choose as the display matches the cars lighting.
Anyway. the changer plays store bought cd's fine but it does not like CD-R's! it has had maybe 2-3 hours of use so its not a weak laser, its just an older model that doesn't read CD-R's well i guess.
So I'm curious if there are better brands of CD-R's that have a higher reflectivity rate then other CD-R's??? maybe its just the cheap grade of CD-R's i have been using? they play fine in every other cd player i have.
What about the black CD-R's? i wonder if they would work better or worse?
Who makes the best quality or highest reflectivity CD-R??

Maybe a other CD-R helps , the CD-R Audio have better
reflexion for the old car players .
My favorit is the fujifilm CD-R for Digital Photos ,
a black CD-R with very good sound ,
and very cheap here in Germany/Europe .

Are you sure it's the reflectivity and not a built in excuse of an "anti-pirate" mechanism?
That was an issue with older CD players, but the companies chose to not go bankrupt and let the machines play all.
Maybe it's rearing it's ugly head again?

the problem with CD-R's is that it tries to play them, but skips and hiccups and has general issues. but normal store bought cd's play perfectly, never skip unless i hit a really big bump or go over rough railroad tracks or something that would cause an obvious skip.
And the problem with Nak stuff is that the only thing compatible is OLD sony cd changers. nothing new works with it and there are no adapters for them. I looked for the Nak/Sony protocol for a long time too as i wanted to adapt a Phatbox brand MP3 player (these are harddrive based car MP3's players that emulate many popular brands of cd players). I have never been able to find any protocol information for the nak decks.
and i have not found any other brand of head unit with orange display. and all of these new car stereos with the fancy swimming dolphins and pop up displays and crap on them. the audio quality is long gone. where as the nak decks have none of that and they actually spent the engineering resources on the audio!
So i thought i would ask. maybe there was a brand of disc known to be better or something that i could give a try to before i give up and give in and put in some piece of junk with the swimming dolphin fancy display.... I figured $5, $10 bucks for a pack a disc's was the cheap way first.

have you tried to clean the laser lens (with a lens cleaner cd or so........)?
usually cd-r for audio have a better reflectivity (fuji,sony etcetera), burning speed maximum 4times.

In my experience, many older cd players were made before 80 minute CDRs were the norm. Your unit probably would play CDR 74min (650MB) but not the 80 min (700MB) discs. The pitch is not the same.
mjf - The unit has about 3 hours of play time on it so i doubt the laser lens is dirty. plus it plays regular cd's fine
Im thinking Nyatt is onto something here. that's a good point i have been using the 700mb disc's I will try a 650 and see if it works better.

Same here with an older Blaupunkt headunit.
I think that`s it.
My Blaupunkt for example can even read 800MB CD-R`s to the biggest extend but sometimes it just skips for no reason. With 650MB (or 700MB) CD-R`s it doesn`t do this at all. For what it`s worth, I use 700MB black discs from 'Intenso' (Black edition), cheap and good IMO.
ahh some success!!! So i went and bought some black CD-R's. never tried them before and nope player wont read them. I looked at 2 diff major computer stores and no 650mb disc's anymore. all are 700!
SO....I dug through my cd's and found some i had recorded a few years earlier on HHB brand 74 minute 650mb disc's and ALL play perfectly! however i tried a smart and friendly brand green dye 650 mb disc and no go. SO...now i guess i am hunting for 650mb disc's LOL!

My observations are from experience. My cd transport will not play a 80 minute (700MB) disc, but has no problems with 74min (650MB) discs. Unfortunately, those 74 min discs are hard to come by. I've been stockpiling some. I've great success with the AZO blue Verbatim discs, 74 min. Really great sound.
Well I took the car out today and drove around and listened to 2 full cd's that i recorded without any issues! So the 650mb disc's are the key!
