Hide Email Address & Private Messaging interaction confusion

In the user CP it seems setting "Hide Email Address?" to "NO"
does not actually show my email address to anyone.

BUT setting that to NO is required to be able to get private messags, even if "Enable Private Messaging?" is set to "Yes".

The interaction & meaning of these two options is confusing to me.

Until the new software is up and running, the Private Messaging is not working at all so let's see if your concerns are answered when we have switched over.
