Hi,
I've been playing around with speakers since about 1982, back then it was whatever drivers I could find that had been thrown out, and there wasn't any science to what sort of box I tried to put them in, but it was still fun.
In about 1985 I got given a pair of chipboard 2 way home built speakers which someone didn't want now that they had upgraded. They were 2way with a 12" Plessey woofer and a 5" plessy mid/wide range. They had no top end, and the base was pretty ordinary, the box design was pretty awfull too, but they sounded better than my previous speakers (which wouldn't have been too hard).
Next I went out and bought some Phillips Dome mids and texttile dome tweeters (with some cheap 3way crossovers) and replaced the mid/wide with those, the improvement was dramatic (even with the tweeter mounted beside the mid..... I didn't know any better). There were a few variations on that over the years as various drivers were toasted at parties, but I came back to what I knew (despite the deficiencies), as all the other (limited by budget) options I tried came out worse.
Better crossovers (still pre made) made a big difference too, and eventually I bought some 10" vifa M26WR-09-08 woofers (which were on special) and made new front baffles to suit (this made the single biggest improvement). Lucky for me the box volume was pretty much spot on for the vifa's (at around 70L).
They are still that way and I'm looking building something from scratch, still using the vifa woofers but with much better cabinets (20 year old raw chipboard with multiple beer spills is really a bit past it), and better mid's and tweeters.
I've played with speaker workshop (including making the impedance jig, and measuring my woofers) and have pretty much designed the cabinets, one thing holding me back though is trying to source morel tweeters here in Australia.
Oh and for any ausies out there who dable in electronics my amp is a Playmaster Series 200 with a few mods. One thing which I am yet to do is replace the cmos input switching with relays, I've done the prototype (only one input) but haven't got around to going the whole hog.
For those that don't know, the Playmaster series 200 is a 100W/channel RMS into 8 ohms, mosfet kit amp with quite decent specs, but with what some would consider to be some design flaws.
Anyway enough of a rave from me. 🙂

Wintermute,
Welcome to diyAudio 🙂
You've demonstrated that you have greater knowledge than me of speakers, and I've made nearly 2000 posts here.
Please join in and enjoy the "knowledge mix" 😉
Cheers,

Well, most knowlege I have is probably from experimenting, with a little theory thrown in from books, you may think I have a lot of knowledge but I think I'm probably just as much a newbe in most areas as everyone else posting here for the first time 🙂
Thanks for the welcome, I'm enjoying myself already. It really makes a difference knowing you can bounce ideas off someone (well lots and lots of people in fact)...... I'm sure I'll have plenty of newbe type questions to ask in future!

Hi Wintermute, and welcome to diyAudio 🙂
Well, I have to say, it sound like you have a pretty good experience base to me. I think those that have hands on practise at playing and modding systems often have much more useful knowledge than those who just sit and simulate for months. 😉
p.s. How are Molly and Case?

<grin> Maybe I should add a tagline. Any Inteligence I may appear to have is Artificial 🙂 ..... then again.......
Your the first person to comment on the name (have been using it on some other forums for a while now).
I think tenacity is my key strength.... I just keep at it until it works 🙂
I've done my fair share of simulating in recent times too but I do enjoy getting my hands dirty. I think I was wearing out my welcome in the lounge room when I had my partner sitting on a saw horse to hold it steady while a woofer I was measuring was clamped between it and another one which I was sitting on 🙂 Need to come up with a better arangement than that 🙂

I first read that book a long time ago when it came out, and every couple of years re-read it to see how much more has come true. 😉

I don't know, run some 20Hz through the system and it could be an interesting form of excitation measurement! 🙂 😉
pm/reads too many books...

I originally read it back in 89 but haven't gone back and re-read it, must do it some time, may make more sense the second time through (I did go back and read the first chapter when I finished and it made a lot more sense!)
I actually skimmed through some last night, and realised that who I thought wintermute was, was in fact neuromancer, so my notion of Wintermute being a little boy on an Island was completely wrong! Wintermute was actually a lot more sinister than I remembered.
On the 20 Hz <BIG GRIN>...... I seem to recall something like that at the time now that you mention it

So SY, is it a book, or a movie? .... Must say I think my reading has been sadly lacking for about the last 12 years or so.... I've probably only read 5-10 books in that time 🙁 most of those last year when my car was dead for 12 weeks and was catching lots of public transport!
Wintermute.
No, the logo was from the Church of Wintermute, dedicated to actively bringing about the internet intelligence that was the core of Neuromancer. (Note: the Church of Wintermute invites people to copy the logo and post it on their sites)
Fair enough... I did actually start to wonder a few days ago just what would turn up on a google search and found the church of Wintermute.
Was a bit mortified actually especially with the "edited" quote on the home page. Started to wonder whether it was such a good alias to use afterall, might give people the wrong idea 🙂..... I definitely hadn't remembered that bit.
Ah well what's done is done.

Now you know why I didn't try to use some fancy handle, just stuck with my initials. "Jubal Harshaw" might have been nice, though...
off topic RAH lovefest
SY:...and again, a few months after the last one i saw, i applaud the RAH reference.
although i personally would probably go with the 'obvious' favorite, Lazarus Long.
*sigh* it's almost enough to make me pick up the books again for the...what...fourth time? a few more times and i'll have them memorized.

Haven't read much RAH, Assignment in Eternity 1 and 2 I think, when I was at school. May be another but can't remember Too long ago.
I guess at least the handle was a conversation starter 🙂
The Penny finally dropped on the "some people take their books too seriously" comment, Bit slow today, in reference to the Church of Wintermute yes??
