I have been looking on and off over the years through the forum so decided I would join. My main aim is to build a nice sounding amp and matched DIY speakers.
I have always played with electronics but have little knowledge; of how each individual component relates to another. I love music and listen to many genres but my amp is rubbish.
After looking over the forum I'm pretty confident I should build a simple stereo 2 channel lm3886. There is allot of support and positive comments.
If there is an Aussies on this site who have built this amp it would be great to hear from you. Specifically what pcb you used and whete you purchase your parts; we seem to pay a premium over the USA prices I.e toroidal's.
I recently returned to study so I think my first build would be using reputable parts but not premium unless essential!

Hi Jonesy, and welcome to diyAudio! I built my LM3886 amp back in about 2005 I think... I didn't use a PCB though, I went for compact P2P.
The power supply was the most expensive part. I bought my torroidal from Harbuch transformers in Hornsby. Not cheap but very good quality.

Gday Jonesy, I built the LM3886 amps to power my AC synchronous motor, pcb's may have been from Peter Daniel from memory.

Yes the transformer does seem the dearest part, although some seem destined to try and spend more in their Caps ;-)
I'm kicking myself a little as I used to strip allot if electronic goods and keep things like caps, transformers, etc but threw it out when I moved out. I had a couple of great wafer transformers that would have worked well!
I was just looking at the Peter Daniel site. Strangely I can't seem to navigate to the LM3886 kits from the site but a direct link comes up from a google search. For USA orders he points to chipamp.com - I didn't realise they were affiliated?
Anyhow; i was looking at the Non-Inverting LM3886 Stereo Kit
$55.00 plus p&h. The Oz dollar is a bit poor at the moment but is it more economical to buy a kit or just pcb's and buy the components locally? I've only shopped at Jaycar but I presume there better options?

My staples for buying components are element14 and RS Australia though there are other options as well depending on what you are after.
I've also bought from Partsconnexion in Canada, if you keep the weight down the shipping comes in at around $10 (under 250g including packaging).

I bought my LM3886 chips from futurlec which is a budget electronics place... some have complained of counterfeit transistors from them, the LM3886's I got were genuine, but that was 8 years ago. Just looking at my blog I paid $4.66 each for them, at the time I think that they were $16 at farnell (now element14).
