Hi everyone. My name is Kevin and I'm 18. About 8 months ago, one of my friends took me over to his neighbor's house. Needless to say, the system that guy had blew my mind. Every song it played was crystal clear and now I'm really obsessed with that sound. I've always been crazy about music, but I didn't know it could sound that good. Hopefully I can learn enough to build a nice system for my house.

Hi Kevin - and Welcome to diyAudio!!! 😀😀😀

Despite rumors you might hear - not all of us are a bucha stuffy old farts anchored to the days of tube amps and turntables. 😉

Welllllllllll - actually - now that I come to think of it......... hmmmmmmm. 🙄

Any ideas on just where you would like to start off at? Wanna build stuff? Learn some electronics? Woodworking skills?? And my favorite - this is a great place to learn sarcasm!!!! I for one have honed that ability to a fine edge!!!😱

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

I wouldn't care if you were. Some of my best teachers were/are the oldest person in the room.

Well I've already done some work with audio. I've redone all of the audio in my truck, including wiring up a 500 watt amp to a MTX Audio Thunder 4000 subwoofer (the box was just a crappy afternoon job though. There is a lot of room for improvement😀). I think it would be best to start with improving my box building skills.

Anyone can build a box. Only a pro can make it sound great.

Heck - we have guys here that use the cardboard box the came in!!!😀
Then there those that use no box at all - OB (Open Baffle)
Tapped Horns for super base - that might be of interest if you want to use your truck bed. 😎
Lota car audio players here doing different things with amps and speakers - pick your poison!

Here is a good link for learning about those electron thingies and some auto audio as well. http://www.bcae1.com/

Thanks for the link c2cthomas. I just bookmarked the link.

I am particularly interested in home audio systems, so if you had any good links for that as well, you'd be helping me a bunch.

Hopefully I can learn enough to start building a system for myself soon. Thanks for your help guys.

Here (diyAudio) is a good place to start with the home audio stuff. There is a lot of knowledge to get your arms wrapped around in the audio world - amplifiers of different flavors (mono block, stereo, multi-channel, class A, class A/B, class D, no class at all, pre-amps, speakers (buncha different kinds there!!!!) turntables for the old vinyl and music servers for the digital stuff. This stuff can keep your mind boggled for as long as you wanna play. Fair warning - just about the time you think that you have it figured out - it will change (sorta like SWMBO).

I suggest that you look into a good amp - but don't go overboard (not yet) and most important some decent speakers. You can get some ideas about the cheap and easy methods by hanging around here. Then you can use those to compare with your latest creations. I personally vote for most important goes to the speakers - without a good set of speakers you can't really enjoy the other toys. Ostripper has a thread on some good amps he is getting up that won't break the bank to build and check out the threads here about open baffle speakers and the Econowave speakers over at AK Design Collaborative - Econo-Waveguide Speaker - AudioKarma.org Home Audio Stereo Discussion Forums

That should keep you busy for awhile!! Enjoy!!!!!
