Hi Everyone
I've already made a couple of postings on the Speaker Forum so I thought that it was time that I introduced myself.
My name is Steve Margolis and I've been playing around with hi-fi for over 30 years. My first stereo came about when I had an old, valve (tube) record player. I changed the cartridge for a stereo one, added an old valve radio for the 2nd channel (I dug around until I could connect the wires somewhere that worked - how I survived I don't know) and, voila, the magic of stereo.
My first speaker project came when I decided that the two speakers (from the valve record player and radio) would be better housed in identical cabinets. I knew nothing about cabinet design and, big surprise, I totally screwed up.
Next, I decided to build some speaker cabinets for my car stereo out of some polystyrene that I'd found. Mind-blowingly awful.
Realising that I was absolutely useless at something I really loved doing, I decided to get an education. I started reading books by Briggs, Jordan, Barenek, etc. Later on I subscribed to "Speaker Builder". I started to, finally, get a feel for the subject.
Some years and some designs later (1990) I formed a company called 7th Veil and designed my first professional speaker - the 7th Veil "System IV". Although I didn't get the funding needed to go into full-scale production, I was pleased with the speaker acoustically and aesthetically. Now I have just designed a new speaker system, the 7th Veil "Nonsuch". It has a choice of separate box woofers, the "Little Awesome" and the "Big Awesome". I am very pleased with this design and am releasing this system commnercially and launching at the "High End Show" in Frankfurt, May 29 - June 2, 2003.
My philosophy is to design the best that I can, with an almost psychedelic degree of innovation but with one constraint ...
I only design room-friendly systems, ie. not too big and not too difficult to place.
Outside of my interest in hi-fi, I am married with 2 young children (aged 2.5 years and 9 months). I am a student and teacher of Ki Aikido and a qualified practitioner of The Feldenkrais Method.

Welcome.
Looked at your site and saw those real good looking speakers.
You say you filled them with sand.
When I look at the drawing, looks like the sand could come down in the bass-tube!!
Of course I'm wrong, although I don't see the 'trick with the sand'
Speakers are full range. Is it a series/parallel construction?
According to my wife, the WAF is very good!! 😉 😉

Thanks for your compliments on the look of the System IVs. I really hope that the new speaker will have a still higher WAF and I'll be interested to get your wife's opinions once I have some photos (the NWF - Netlist wife factor). Seriously, I think that often it's the husband who chooses the speakers but his wife authorises the payment (or not)
Re. the System IV, yes you're right. The drive units were connected series/parallel so the final impedance of the 4 units was the same as the impedance of each unit. Incidentally, I could detect no adverse effect whatsoever from the series connection.
Originally, the cabinets were bolted to the stands and, I'm embarassed to say, I did have some problems with sand leakage (just read the Hi-Fi Choice review of September 1990). However, changing the coupling between cabinet and stand made a big difference to the sound quality and, at the same time, solved the sand problem.
The fibreglass egg (with a rectangular port leading to the stand) was completely sealed to the cabinet with silicon sealant. The sand is between the egg and cabinet. To visualize it, it helps if you realize that there's no sand in the stand or inside the egg. I still have a pair of these speakers and a friend has another and there's no trace of sand leakage, even after 13 years.

I ones saw a drawing of a so-called ‘ideal’ speaker. It looked like a globe with a diameter of about 3/4m.
All the speakers (20 or more) were full range and placed all over the globe. Also, it was turning in all directions and claimed to be the best solutions to ‘spread’ the sound.
Of course this was only theory, I never saw such a speaker. I think it was impossible to build but fascinating all the way.
Anyway, I wish you good times here a DIYaudio. 🙂
