While searching for Celestion drivers in Australia I came across this: http://www.melmusic.com.au/shop/index.php?productID=10139

103dB@1W seems interesting for $AU142 shipped. Anyone care to comment?

The best (so far) I can find a real Celestion (25W) G12M for $AU215 shipped.

I know it is not a huge difference, but considering the use this is going to get I will probably go with the clone unless someone has a specific bad story to tell about them.

Thanks,

Brian

Lorantz looks very nice, but I never hear it. Buying? Why not... I have two China Celestion clones and can't hear big difference to original.

So, look at proposal for tube preamp. This preamp you can connect directly to lm3875. I think it's exactly what your son need.

Thanks everyone for your concern and input. I will be quite for a while now as I feel that I have used up my quota of "free" advice 😉 . My next post should be documentation of my Thor build when the bits arrive.

FYI, my current plan is (all subject to change after I get Thor built):
- build Thor
- build a combo cabinet
- build a LM1875 based power amp
- buy a Lorantz driver
- put it all together

I understand what you are saying about the tube pre-amp, but I'm just not up to it yet. My current DIY resume consists of a pair of cross-overs for 2-way speakers!

Thanks,

Brian

Whether to use linear or non-linear speakers is a subjective issue - durability is not: Many of the construction methods that make PA and instrument speakers tolerate the abuse they are subject to (like large excursions and high temperatures) tend to create non-linearities and therefore they are not used in HiFi or car audio drivers. As a result HiFi speakers just won´t last long if you play the amplifier at high volume levels. To make matters worse, HiFi speakers are typically quite inefficient as well so you have to drive them harder thus subjecting them to even rougher abuse (along with your amp). They are not a good choice.

That is far from the truth for many pro drivers.

I just tried hooking up a Bass amp to a 91dB 12 in 300w Kenwood Car subwoofer and it sounds Really good with Bass but a little Farty with guitar....This is actually the first Non-Instrument Speaker that I have tried that actually sounded good with an Instrument, all other "Hi Fi" speakers I have tried in Guitar/Bass amps sounded awefull and had bad speaker Breakup problems and couldn"t handle strong Transients......

Hi,

Regarding the Thor, the cabinet design appears to be fundamentally
flawed / poor , there is a large thread on the subject stiill going :

Sorry - wrong Thor. I have tried to be very specific in my earlier posts and the first time I leave out the specifics there is a mis-understanding
😉

I am referring to the Thor effects pedal from runoffgroove.com. I plan to use it as a pre-amplifier.

Thanks,

Brian
