Solid state home audio amps will handle a variety of loads above 4 ohms. Many manufacturers like rating their amps output at 6 ohms now rather than the traditional 8 ohms. If you're talking about tube amps most prefer an 8 or 16 ohm load. Some will say they will handle a 4 ohm load but my experience is that they perform better with higher loads.

Way back when, -most home amps were 4 ohms. Today, mainly after japanese influence, I think 8 ohms seems to be more or less standard.
Somehow 4 ohms seems to normal for car amps, -can't really see why, other than 4 ohms req's less voltage and more current, which is easier in a car.
