I've been reading around this forum for about a week now. I feel like the more that I read, the more I get on confused about what I need. So... I may b optimisitc about getting responses, but I'm going to post what I'm looking to achieve. If you all will, could you put in your $0.02 worth? Thanks in advance....
At first, I wanted to do a setup like BlockHeads... however, I don't even know if that's possible for me or not. I found that I can get the Buhl 2900 for relatively cheap. (well - for a few more hours at least).
Here's what I'm working with: 2 choices really.. but then again - not really.
Option A)
I guess with this option, I go with the LCD/OHP route. The room I would be working with is a spare bedroom. There is a closet on one wall directly across the wall I would be projecting. The closet is 13' from the wall/screen. I would be sitting roughly 8' from the wall. So at 13' from the screen, is there any way at all to project onto a 8' screen? That's what I'm wanting to achieve..
Option B)
This route I would probably go with just a video projector. I don't mind to go this route, however, I CANNOT go over $1K. That's why I wanted to go the other route if possible. I can put this projector in the same room, or another room that is a tad bit smaller. I would be projecting on an 8' screen, and I would hang this projector onto the ceiling...
Those are my options! I just moved into my first house, and I'm a bachelor, so I have 1 bedroom that I can do whatever I please in. Again, I cannot spend over $1K. I am a widescreen fanatic, so I want a big picture to watch my movies. I've been very wary of the LCD/OHP method, however, with my budget, I can't hardly see any other way.
If you could give me any suggestions as to what to buy as far as an OHP, LCD, or video projector, then please post them. I want a good picture so I can almost predict that I go the projector route..
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time & attention to read all of this!
Thanks again,
AC

Hey AC well what are you wanting something more permanent or something moveable, If its permanent I would Buy a lcd monitor and tear it apart or if not go with a lcd projection panel, if your going to use the Overhead projector method Do a search on this board for( 3 dog theater now open) or something to that effect, the owner made a false wall with fabric with a little hole for the over head projector( top part with the lens and stuff) so you didnt see anything so it was essentially a lil work room within the room, He has pics of it on this site I hope that helps.😀
Many people achieve an LCD monitor and OHP for ~$500. At $1k budget you probably have enough to build a nice custom enclosure. You could probably get a nice X1 DLP for under $1k. They usually go for $999, or $899 with rebate, and shipping is almost always free. Other comapnies are also starting to offer sub-1000 DLPs.
if your budget is up to $1K, Infocus X1 or other entry level DLP projector will be a good investment. You can 'test' in focus projectors by going to this website https://www.vernontech.com/partner/infocus/ . dell.com routinely has 10%-20% off its inventories. some people got X1 for ~$760 from Dell last week.
Thanks guys for your responses... I've just about made up my mind to go with the X1... I'll just have to save a lot longer 🙁
Thanks 18wheeler for the heads up... I appreciate it.
If I ever get this thing, I'd be glad to show my setup!
Thanks everyone!

I'l put my DIY $950 LCD Projector up against the X1 any day!
I've seen the X1. The best way to describe fast action scenes is with one word... B L U R!
If you want a commercial unit no matter what the price is you shouldnt even be thinking about a DIY Projector. People are missing the whole point of this project.
Go buy the X1 and have a few friends and family over. You'll get a good response. Not invest 1k into a DIY projector and do the same. The reactions will be OUT OF THIS WORLD! "Oh my GOD... you mean to tell me you MADE this!?"
Trust Me! 🙂
Oh and... Slapping an LCD panel on top of a OHP DOESNT COUNT!

jcbklyny - I haven't even seen a X1 yet... I'm probably going to some stores in Nashville today to perhpas get a peak...
I realize part of the reason for doing the DIY is for the experience and fun of doing it, as well as to be able to brag and boast that you did it all yourself.
Bottom line... I want the best picture possible. If it's dropping $1K on a commercial projector like an X1 or dropping $1K on a DIY.
If yours is so good, will you email me and give me a tutorial on what you used and how you built it?
I appreciate your time and attention.
Thanks again,

The Sanyo Plv z1 and X1 were neck in neck on avsforum about 7 months ago. The sanyo in my opinion is better even though its lcd not dlp. I saw a demo of the sanyo and I was very impressed.
Its native rez is 964x544 Pixels (16:9)
The x1 is only 800x600(4:3) so if you watch the same 16:9 movie on your X1(assuming you are not using an anamorphic lens)
Your rez is 800x450 pixels. If you continue the math you will see that when watching 16:9 movies on the
Sanyo you get about 525,000 pixels,
X1 = 360,000
Your Diy lcd projector = 592,000 pixels
It still remains to be seen but I also think my diy lcd projector will be better than the x1.

jcbklyny, your atitude to the whole thing is kinda snobish. Building a diy projector is not just for the the fun of it, and is not just for the reactions. Doing anything just to brag is pointless. I don't see why you say that if you consider a commercial projector to not even think about DIY. The whole reason DIY projectors started is for a cheap alternative to a commercial projector. Most people really don't care wether they toiled for hours to make something or went to Best Buy and bought it. Lots of people would rather just go buy a nice compact box, mount it on their celing and be done with it. I don't think it's wrong for these same people to consider DIY because they want to get the best picture for the price.
Ehuwiko, I dont mean to sound rude or obnoxious and I understand your point about people not caring about putting in the time... learning and building it themselves.
What I'm saying is those are the people that shouldn't be in this hobby! DIY ANYTHING is for people who like building things themselves. Anyone can just go out and buy what they want. Wheres the fun in that!
And anyone can slap a panel on a OHP and call it a day. Meanwhile none of those people actually KNOW HOW the optics in the OHP works or how the optics in commercial units work. Even if they think they do!
I just feel like if your going to build something yourself... have some pride! It's not about bragging. It's about PRIDE. I take pride in the unit I've built. Thats all.
I see people making death traps on this board. Using materials that could burst into flames. Ballasts mounted on WOOD!?400watt light bulbs sitting inches away from plan plywood or plexiglass. Mylar? You would NEVER be able to sell any of these units because they are a fire hazzard! I've shown some of my friends who are electricians the units people on the boards are building... and they almost had a heart attack! You dont know how dangerious these units are.
Why? Because they didnt take the time to learn how a box should be built. Go on some of the chinese DIY boards and tell me how many wooden enclosures you find.
Again... not bragging... just proud!
dracul, I wouldnt doubt that your unit is better. The X1 uses old outdated technology. Which is why it's under a thousand dollars. It's just the cheapest choice for people looking for a commercial unit.
somedaydavinci, I should have my site up within a week or so. I'll email you the link so you can take a look at it once it's ready. I plan on having step by step tutorials like I posted for the NEC1560m.

what are the comercial projectors made out of? plastic i believe also take a search on projector central (dot) com this is regarding your theroy on how there is no duel bulb units out there and the duel bulb theroy dont work, there are few high end projectors out there actually that use 3-4 bulbs inside, once again jcb your attitude is shortening your wings.

What kind of bulbs do they use? The same kind we use for this project? NO. Different kind of bulb. With the MH bulbs we use, dual bulbs will cause more of a problem then actually help. And the next time you have access to a commercial unit. Open the plastic up. See metal shielding.... OH. Ok
🙂
And Ace, your still wrong about sphercial reflectors... no matter WHAT you say!

I went into Ultimate electronics the other day and they were showing men in black 2 on a $ 3000 Sharp projector. I didn't check the model number cause it was too dark in there. The picture was magnificent but the action sequences were so blurred that it gaive me a headache after only two -three minutes of viewing. I would check out any DLP or LCD commercial projector with an action movie viewed near the size you would be viewing before buying.
It is hardly worth it to have a great looking picture if it only looks good during still or non moving pictures.
