Hello everyone. This is my first post here and it feels good to finally gotten around to join in after a year or two of lurking in the shadows.
I have a CDX-993 that won´t read disc´s. I changed the laser thinking that was the problem but the problem stayed. It tries to read the disc and every fifteenth attempt or so it succeed´s and the disc´s information can be seen in the window. Then if you try to press play nothing happens though.
I was looking forward to start tweaking this thing so if anyone has any idea´s it would be very much appreciated...

I do have some info on other CDX9XX models like the 910, 920, 930...
You should however first try to determine if these are similar machines otherwise the info will be useless.
/Hugo 🙂

Check all connectors between board and moving parts. Also read the RF signal with a scope if you have one.
Does the lens collide with the disc, had a yamaha that did that, this would indicate focus problems, my focus drive had major problems didnt't fix it though. Does it spin the disc properly?

Hello again
Yes, i changed the whole "kss" mechanism and not just the laser. The disc spins like it should too. I don´t have a repairmanual for the model otherwise i probably could figure out where to find the rf-signal with a scope.
It would feel terrible to scrap it but i don´t know what more i can do with it.
I honestly don´t have a clue where to look next...

Dont know if this helps any.
On an old cdx 520 there was a pin labled EFMI which i think was the signal from the laser after a gain stage. The signal was read between that pin and a pin labled G, four pins in this group where you could connect measuring equipment.
In the cdx 520 it was 2V PP and it should make a nice eye pattern if you pressed play.
Edit: And i also recomment Schaltungsdienst if you cannot find the manual anywhere else.

Hello to everyone, too.
This is actually also my first post posting.
I do own the cdx 993 myself and fear, I´ll have a problem with it myself.
After working fine for months, it now (sometimes) starts to "jump" over the disc (moving fast forward), mostly at the beginning of the disc.
Could this be the laser-unit?
@cobra2 you said a few times, it uses a common sony laser. would you be so kind and tell me wich oone it is, so I can order it (just in case...).
@pete I do have the technical manual for the 993...

Thank you very much!
I looked in the service manual and under "Mechanical Parts - CD Mechanism Unit) ist simply says "CD Mech Unit: MGCB30" and "Pick Up: KCP1H".
I did not found anything about a Sony Laser Unit.
But I´ll try to get one (or two) as fast as possible, just to have it here. And then I´ll have the Player´s Laser checked (and maybe change the OP-Amps).
I don´t want the same thing happen to this one as it did to my CDX 1100. It´s Laser is completely done and a new one out of sight.
So, again: Thanks!
Nils

To find the model, don't look in the service manual, look on the pickup, there's always(With Sony KSS) a white sticker with the model clearly marked in black.
Also, I have a Sony CDP-XE300 that has the exact same skipping, fast forwarding problem.
In my case, since I have 3 Sony CDP and I use only 2, I swapped the drive(Using KSS210) from a model with a crappier UI and condition.
Someone could tell me if changing the pickup turns successful, what else, I'll have to try to change the motor and regulator, since the CD is easy to stop spinning with your finger when it starts working bad.
A very good supplier in US & Canada only unfortunately, studio sound electronics, has both the KSS210 and KSS213.
Hi,
had the same problem with a Yamaha CDX-920. Maybe it helps you. In the inside there are two resistors which can be adjusted. One for track and the other - I don´t know.
Take a screwdriver and try to adjust them. It took me about 3 hours, but now the player works again. I alway did it a little step when the unit was turned off.
But be careful and mark the resistors before turning them!

Yamaha CDX-520 Similar problem and fix
I have had this unit for a good while and doing spring cleaning found it in the closet. The tracks were not playing correctly, skipping bits and music. I read in this thread that there was a problem with the lens focusing on a similar unit. So I took that approach and voila! It worked, what I did was adjusting the spin motor wheel that goes on top pf the CD tray with a small screwdriver. After a few attempts all was good. I have been listening to a few CD´s, and so far so good. Hope this helps other people with the same issue.
