help with vifa d27tg-45-06 replacement

Hello everyone,

I am new to your forum and am here to share pictures of my home built speakers and humbly ask your advice.

My friend is an ex audio engineer and he designed speakers for me and built the crossover network. I am a furniture maker (among other things) and built the cabinets.

The tweeters are vifa d27tg-45-06 and are burnt out. I need replacement recommendations; preferably something with 104mm OD. I could go bigger but would prefer not to drag out my router and make a big mess; I definitely can't go smaller. I know very little about the ins and outs of speaker design other than constructing the actual cabinets so any help would be super helpful. If it makes a difference for compatibility my mid range is a Vifa p13mh-00 and the woofer is a p25wo-00.


Some details about the speakers:

My friend showed me the design and he explained that the density of the cabinet was important and also the volume was very specific. I made the cabinets out of MDF and did a finish using a water based clear coat in which a put in some pigment and metallic powder, so the finish is a green metallic glaze. The finish was kind of an experiment and I'd say it came out ok. I asked my friend if he calculated the displacement of the crossover network which was supposed to fit inside the cabinet. He said no. So, I figured it might be cool to put the crossover network in a separate compartment under the main cabinet; thus keeping the volume correct and allowing the CN to be displayed.

I don't know any of the details about the crossover network but maybe you can see the size of the coils in the pic; it seemed like he knew what he was doing.

Australia!!

I was hoping to get this fixed this week. Also, I have been reading that the vifa tweeters might not have the best consistency in their manufacturing. So, I was thinking that I could use this as an opportunity to take a step up in quality. The other thing is if I get new speakers by someone that is still in business then if they blow again I will be able to get parts easily.

The D27 is a good tweeter, OK not the best tweeter but given that you have the XO already built perhaps it would be best to use a drop in replacement.

Airmail you would have it in 4-6 days.

Pix don't show so I can't comment on the XO
have you thought about why the tweeter blew in the first place?

Okay folks, here are links to pictures of the speakers and CO network on flickr.

I don't know if you can really get any useful info from them, there is not a whole lot of detail. I used to have a schematic somewhere but who knows where that went.

Apparently the guy used some military spec capacitors and those copper coils seemed pretty beefy. He also gave me some super special speaker cable van der hal den hoosen whatsen or something. I think he said the cable was all carbon and I remember looking it up on ebay and saw 2 8ft lengths for like $800!

If it is best to just put in the same thing then that is what I will do. I have no expertise in the speaker department so that is why I am here; seeking out some knowledgeable folks who don't mind giving out their 2 cents for free.

The tweeter blew in the first place I am guessing because I probably just blasted the thing too loud. There is no protection in the circuit. I understand it is possible to put a fuse before the speaker; I am not really sure why he did not do this in the first place. I think it would be a good addition; does anyone know how to wire something like that up?

Perhaps your amplifier was clipping, what are you using to drive those boxes??

Classic looking 70's style of box, nice woodwork, and the XO looks to be made with quality components but it is difficult to give an opinion with-out a circuit diagram, othes more competent than myself should be able to help tho

Light reading!!!!

I will have to study that for a couple of hours to make sense of it.

I have an NAD 2600 amplifier, my friend modified it though. He opened it up, did some soldering and wired in some giant capacitors which are taped to the back of the amp in a big wad. He said they were military spec and that no one made them any more.

The 27TDFC can generally drop in without an xo change. Maybe just a tad more padding depending on personal taste, but that's all. It's a very robust tweeter and quite flexible in crossover points.

That makes me feel much better. The tweeters are coming tomorrow. I am really looking forward to getting my high frequencies back.

I'll let you know how it goes
