help with subwoofer placement

Hi guys, here is my situation. I live in an apartment where I can't make a lot of noise but I like loud music and movies. I want to ideally have the most bass possible from my sitting position while minimizing noise leaking out through the walls or floor.

My problem is that when I put my sub in the corner close to my sitting position the bass is relatively weak, but if I stand at the opposite corner of the room, or probably for the people living below me, the bass is ten times louder and very boomy. How can I reduce this effect? I end up having to cut my bass down to near zero as to not be a public nuisance.

The easiest way to increase bass at the listening position is to put the sub in your listening position at ear level then crawl around the room, keeping your ear level at woofer level, and find out where the bass sounds the loudest and then put the sub in that location. After that, adjust the woofer level to preference.

This isn't the route to the best QUALITY bass but that's what you have to give up for apartment living.

First of all

How big is the room?
What subwoofer?
what are your mains crossed over to?
How many open corners do you have?

If there is a phase switch on the back of the subwoofer, you could try giving that a switch, if theres a variable phase, play around with that untill you get the cleanest and loudest bass in your location. If you are running a best buy sub, then it may always be boomy, simply becuase its easier to make a tiny sub sound boomy and loud than to make it sound flat and low.
