I have had my holiday break and been working my little butt off to finance my diy hobby, i was planning on spending about $400 but now i have discovered that all my hard work as bumped that budget to about $800 and this leaves me enought to build a shiva subwoofer.
Anyway i have been looking around and a few thigs have taken my fancy, all different prices though.
Firstly the seas Njord kit, it uses an 8" coated paper woofer and the 27TFFC tweeter that everyone likes, it also have a really simple XO. this would cost about $400 to build.
Secondly i looked back at VAF as they offer well designed speakers and i have heard them and like the sound alot, they cost $1062 which i think i could stretch to. they are MTM with 8" audax drivers. they also have 95db efficiency.
Im really wondering whether they are as good value as using a free design.

Personally don't like MTM's unless they are built as a 2.5 way.
They offer no more bass extension than a smaller MT but
do have high efficiency at the cost of generally 4 ohm loading.
Good for underpowered valve amplifiers.

Okay, what do you think of the Njord though?
as this would be much mopre in my budget, allowing me to buy some other things.

Not sure if this helps but if i had to sum up what i like in a loudspeaker it would be these things, Transperancy, detail, efficiency, these are the things i am looking at for this project, bass response is also important but not high spl bass as for music i dont mind it soft but HT i use a sub.
i am also thinking now of the VAF DC7s as they sound nice (i have listened to ALL the vaf ranges) transperant and are 93db efficient and they come in my budgey nicely, i just want to know if i could design of find a design that beats it fotr the price. also i would build my own boxes and not buy theirs as then i save $300. which will pay for my shiva.

I would take a look at the DIY ProAc Response 2.5 clone that people rave about. I've not heard it though the cabinet dimensions and crossover are well sorted out, and of course the Scan-Speak drivers are absolutely top shelf. Bass extension is said to be very impressive. I guess you could build a set for $600-$900 depending on the quality of parts and the cabinets.
The original 2.5's got rave reviews and would cost you $4500 from your local audio salon. Might be worth a shot...

Hmmm,, thankyou sreten. but as you said in your first point that they may sound old fashioned, unfortunately at the moment im after a modern detailed crisp sound. I will keep them in mind but id prefer somethign with higher sensitivity such as the Vaf DC7 kit which i consider a very good sound and i can live with the price comfortably, though almost double that or the Njord. it has 93db of sensitivity and also more power handling, bass response would not be as high though with my sub on or HT i will not really need high bass. but these DC-7s do deliver alot for their size and price (specs and listening tests).

YAY i think i may have decided on what mjy money should go on. Going through lots of thread i have decided to go for an MTM using Peerless HDS woofers (non-phase plug 6.5") and the custom XLS tweeter (80653).
