I'm wondering what the specifications for the SPDIF format are, specifically in handling multiple channels. The specific situation would be outputing preprocessed channels from a computer sound card, i.e. 3 left and 3 right channels with separate crossover and EQ filters already applied. Would I need a soundcard with specific capabilities or should any SPDIF output be capable of this. Thanks in advance.

IEC60958 (SPDIF) will not convey uncompressed multichannel audio. There is another specification, IEC61937, that will allow AC3,DTS etc. to conveyed over IEC60958.

I think Alesis ADAT is your best option if you want everything on one wire. The TX/RX chips are cheap, around $3.
