help with RS drivers

Greetings all,

My friend has recently gotten ahold of 2 Radio Shack 40-1286C 8" drivers. They were a gift from his father so unfortunately he can't exchange them without hurt feelings. I caught an old post on Audio Asylum indicating that these drivers will only work in an open baffle, however that's as far as the description goes. We are willing to try an open baffle, but I'm not sure how large I would need to make the baffle. Obviously the smaller the better but he could probably go as big as necessary for decent (respectively) sound. The TS drivers I have found are as follows:

Fs 53Hz
Vas 1.73 cu ft
Qts 1.16
Qes 1.43
Qms 6.06
Re 7.6 ohms

If you guys might be able to help me out with a baffle size and where on the baffle to mount the speaker, my friend and I would very much appreciate it. Thanks!

George

Baffle size depends alot on room placement. This driver has a very limited excursion before it begins to distort, so it really needs to be in an as large as possible baffle, like mounted in one of the room's walls, or at the other extreme, on a small one that severely limits LF response. Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but that's the cold hard facts of the matter, so I recommend a box of some sort.

Do a search of the fullrange forum, there's been a number of different cab designs posted there. Personally, I recommend using one of my pipe designs. 😉
