I'm a college student and my roommate and I had the excellent luck of finding some Klipsch KG 5.5s that were about to be thrown out. Long story short, we swapped one driver and one tweeter and were able to salvage one working pair. I've attached a picture pre-cleaning.
My goal now is to make these speakers sound even better. I'm hoping I could defer to y'alls experience so I can get this right the first time.
1) Amplifier. Right now I have a Dayton Audio DTA-1 Class D amp powering the KG 5.5s. It works as intended and fills a 10x12 dorm room very nicely. I'm open to buying the amp for a unit that produces more accurate sound. An amp that has caught my attention is the NAD D-3020. Do y'all have any experience with that amp? Or is there an amp that works particularly well with the 5.5s?
2) Recapping. Date codes on the speaker seem to indicate that these 5.5s were built in 1997. For preventative maintenance, I'm entertaining the idea of recapping the crossover. Currently I'm thinking about swapping in a Solen 24uF polypropylene capacitor. Do y'all have any recommendations for different brands of caps? Also I don't know if it would be worth my time to swap the resistors as well.
3) Cabinet work. I've already added extra sound insulation inside the cabinet by doubling up the original factory foam pads. I've heard of spraying insulation on the inside cabinet walls. Any advice here would really help.
Thanks in advance for all the help.
