I'm building a patio stereo system and have most of the build components in hand, including: Sure 4x100w TK2050 amp board, SMPS300r power supply, Raspberry Pi (pseudo AirTunes receiver), HiFiMeDiy Sabre DAC, & Definitive Technology AW6500 speakers.
My next step is to get all these mounted into a waterproof project box. The only problem I'm having is coming up with a solution for an input selector. I'd like to have the Raspberry Pi act as an always connected streaming source for my collection of digital files and internet radio. I'd also like to have the ability for friends to be able to plug in their smart phones to a 3.5mm headphone jack to play music at any time. I've seen some products that can sense when a phone is connected and automatically switch to that input, which would be cool, but even a rotary switch would be fine. It seems like this would be simple to implement but I'm more of a hook stuff together rather than a build a circuit kind of guy. Anyone know of a good compact solution that I can integrate with these other boards in the project box?
Also as for volume control: I found an in-wall volume knob (Russound ALTx-2D) that goes between the amp and speakers for a couple bucks at a thrift store. Is this going to impact sound quality much and are there better places to attenuate volume than after the amp stage?
Any other suggestions to improve this project are more than welcome. Thanks!

Have a look at sound.westhost.com for some ideas. It's unlikely that you will get what you want off the shelf so you might need to brush up on your soldering skills. The auto-switching could be accomplished with a variation on a sound operated switch.
Project 38 should steer you in the right direction. Although the circuit shown uses the relay to switch mains power, you can use the relay to switch inputs.
