Hello Folks,
I was at the local Value Village today and right when I walked in the door there was a turntable sitting on the counter. I know next to nothing about turntables but it looked good. On close examination I realized it was a Rega Planar 2 for 49.00! Did not take me long to walk up to the counter and slap down some cash. When I got it home I was looking at the tone arm and headshell. I did not recognize the brand but I looked it up on the internet and Stax seems to be a good. Can anyone tell me if it’s just the headshell that’s Stax or is it the whole tone arm? I can’t seem to find a model number on the headshell or tone arm. Am I not looking in the right place? I have attached some pictures any help on the model would be appreciated.
Shane

I hate you
Congrats on your score..can't help you with the arm other than to note Stax is indeed a top drawer Co...If they put their name on it, I'can't be to bad 😉

Here it is..
It was released in '77, and replaced with a staight tube version in '79.
And oh, now I really hate you 😉 . Googling this arm, I found 3 places that sold it for over a grand in the last 2 years..I hope your feeling really guilty.

I hate me too,
I check that place all the time and finally got lucky
Im not sure if thats the exact arm as that one is carbon fiber on the arm part,
seems odd to me that it would just be a stax headshell as I dont think they would just sell it alone.
Also the lever to raise and lower the arm does not even touch the arm so I think its after market.
cheers

they have value village in BC as well? cool. I have had a couple of good finds there but nothing anywhere close to a Rega 2 with that arm on it 🙂
it must be after market because that turntable wouldn't have that arm on it. anyways the lifter can probably be adjusted with a small screwdriver or allan key.
you know thats a very good turntable as well. same one i have 🙂 i had to pay actual money for it many years ago.

Rega
It is all Rega, the shell is from elsewhere...
Arm is known as RB-200.
Still an interesting arm, and good value.

Re: Rega
Yes, I think the early Regas had an arm that was a derivative of the Acos Lustre - the arm in your photographs certainly looks like a Lustre. It's a medium mass arm, nothing special, but perfectly useable (assuming that when the headshell lift was dinged it didn't damage the bearings).

Thanks guys!
I knew someone on here would know exactly what it was. It is exactly like the picture.
I thought that the headshell had been banged and bent at first too but after looking at some pictures on the internet it appears that it was made that way.
They do have Value Village in BC as well, there is a few in Vancouver that I went to when I lived there. I just moved to Burlington about two months back and forgot to change my Location. I got the Turntable at the VV on Fairview.
Nutron7, do you know of any good places in the Toronto area that sell vintage Hi-fi?
