In other realms of manufacturing, it's common practice to bin production after quality control, or to have lower QC standards for a particular production run for a lower-tier client.
You can see this in a lot of tools and machinery, where part design is identical but level of fit and finish varies between brands. Also, some (mostly offshore) manufacturers will just run unauthorized production runs and sell the "pirated" production to grey-market dealers. Either way, you might get a perfectly serviceable unit. Or not.
