Everything 80Hz and below passed to the subs, 7.2 system.
The Boss has complained that the noise from the cooling fan in the subwoofer amp is too loud [ yes it probably is] and I've just replaced the Peavey PV i 2000 with an old Kenwood power amp.
I've now got only half the power driving the subwoofers, now 250W rather than 540W per channel.
I've no idea how much peak volume I've lost if any. If it's only 3 to 6 dB or so we can live with that but if it's much more than that I'll start looking for another cheap power amp with passive cooling or very quiet fans.
I'll take the Peavey to the shed for the party system so nothing really lost

OK Then so long as the present amp doesn't go into clipping too often I can probably live with that.

Well, keep in mind that 1 kW = +30 dB, so what's the total in room efficiency vs desired peak SPL is how you want to look at it.
Well SWMBO says it's too loud most of the time anyway and she leaves the room when I play war movies.
This isn't the usual HTiaB 3inch woofer system FCR are 6.5" woofers so not too bad SPL wise.
We will measure tonite and her preferred listening level but I would guess cannon shots around 105 dB.
Definitely need more wall hangings but WAF very low on those at the moment

So we measured using an iPhone app and my Android app.
Both measure peaks at 104dB but averages were different; iPhone 84dB but my Android phone 92 to 96dB. I think my phone was not accurate; it felt more like 80 to 84 in line with the iPhone. The old Tandy decided not to work but it is about 40 years old and probably corroded inside.
Lots of headroom, TV was set on ~-22dB

This may be out of left field but HT subwoofer power requirements are infrequent and rarely sustained. I've no idea of the schematics of your amplifier but a simple mod may provide a solution.
A simple temperature sensor / fan-speed regulator from a computer costs pennies.
Others may know more about suitability.

There tends to be more difference using internal microphones. Androids generally have more hardware variability, so that can be an issue also.I think my phone was not accurate; it felt more like 80 to 84 in line with the iPhone.
Averaging could be different or adjustable in various apps.
The data is a bit old at this point, but I assume the variability shown below is still similar when using internal microphones, but whose app is most accurate may be different now.

Ran out of time 'finishing' this thought WRT 'total in room efficiency' in that we have to sum the max available, so if LCR + L/R surrounds, then 10log(5) = + ~7 dB, ditto the LFE channel if speakers set to 'small'.Well, keep in mind that 1 kW = +30 dB, so what's the total in room efficiency vs desired peak SPL is how you want to look at it.

So, the system is only 84 dB eff.?
Probably not. we had another 22dB available at the volume control, just that SWMBO wasn't happy with that SPL as it was.

LR&C are rated 88dB at 1W/M and the amp has 400W available over the 7 speakers, ignoring the nominal 100W per channel in stereo. Speakers set to Large and crossing at 80Hz and the normal setting of +3dB at 30Hz on the subs
