Reupholstering the U15 -- Ozzyite instead of Ozite

[Silly mode, if you haven't figured it out!]

As part of my plans to restore my pair of U15s, at some point they may need to be reupholstered. Stock they come with carpeting called Ozite, which some wag called "rat fur". Ozite is a corpation name, but here it just means "black carpeting" 🙂

I have conceived a product more in keeping with where such a loudspeaker is conventionally used. My new carpet shall be called Ozzyite, an all-organic product made from the hair of an ageing English heavy metal singer known for his bat-eating and recreational substance abuse over decades 😀

Here is the fur-bearing animal in his natural state:

Domesticating the U15 -- thoughts & general whining

I continue to enjoy my decrepit U15 pair. An enduring mystery to me is this: I wel understand that getting "good" bass (however you may define that) is the biggest challenge in a home audio system, maybe in PA too. While my stuff is not state of the art (unless "art" is kindergarten finger-painting 😀 ), I still believe that a pair of 15" Alpine subs + the 15" in each U15 "should" get me decent bass. But I seem to fall short. Nor is it lack of power. I have eight channels of iNuke power and balanced inputs and preamps. Still I can't seem to get the wall-shaking bass that even my single Sunfire sub of years ago could manage.

I have basic test gear available, REW and a mic (albeit not calibrated). I can EQ to more or less a target curve, limited by glitchy JRiver sweeps. I must have JRiver active since it is my active crossover.

More's the pity, I don't even (usually) listen at ear-splitting volumes. At least I have grasped the part about the mids and tweeter of the U15 not needing much power at all 😎

Ijit visits Promised Land (DSL @ Gainsville GA)

Enroute home from a trip to VA and MD, the location of xrk971's secret lab and lair having escaped my notice yet again 🙂 I asked for (and got) permission to visit Danley's factory* and audition the legendary SH-50 and a few others.

Many thanks to James and Cooper, not to be confused with

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Fenimore_Cooper

as well as a few more whose name escapes my mind (low gravity) 🙂

I'll skip reviews of the SH-50 and other speakers, which are done better by others. I will just say I am damned impressed :worship: and while scraping together ~$8K is some effort, a pair of these in my home is not an impossibility. Until then I must content myself with my butchered Yorkville U15 pair and sundry other nameless objects 😀

*DSL discloses that their cabinets are made in NC at a furniture (?) shop. Super affluent customers might wish to consider having their next fine set of Cherry or Walnut dining room or living rooms sets have a set of SH-50, TH118 built in. 🙄

I also listened to the SM100, another (more reasonable?) candidate for the living room 🙂

I think they played the 2nd-smallest tapped horn (TH115 maybe); I listened to the SH50 both "with" and "without". Clearly, the SH50 needs a little help on the lowest octave but that is not news.

Heaven help me, there is a pair on Ebay ($6000+ freight cross country). Hmmmm...... 🙂

Not-even-yet-a-buyer's remorse: If I purchased a set of SH50, then years of tweaking, parted-out Yorkville U15, various tossed aside expensive drivers, not to mention about four sets of loathsome Bose 901 breeding in a dank and dark room 🙂 , as well as no less than six units bearing the despised name "Behringer" will suddenly have their reason for existence called into question 😀

Historical interest (or antiquing Danley)

Here is an odd duck, er speaker 🙂

RARE Danley / SPL TRIK Synergy Horn Speakers Monitors (PAIR) | eBay

I've no idea if this is "rare" or if the price is good. It does appear to be a genuine Unity (not Synergy) design, the SPL-TRIK model from Sound Physics Labs per the label. Specs not given, but I would guess it is a "top" similar to the still in production Yorkville Unity U15.

Disclaimer: I have no commercial interest in this listing; due to reality constraints, I shall let other curators bid on said item for their collection 😀

I don't know that I have heard the SH100's.

I have my SH50's on top of two per side 12" Mini clones with JBL 2206's in them and they have "obsoleted" some pretty formidable speakers of mine. I think the TH15's would be the ticket.

These things have really changed my loudspeaker journeys direction.

Thanks for the reply,
Barry.

I wish...!

I envy and admire such a system 😀

Re the used SH-50's, the auction is still on, but I am leaning to "no" mainly because of their unknown condition. Seller appears to be reputable, but is a renter of pro gear. It is entirely possible there is nothing wrong with the speakers, a fact that an inspection might confirm, if I did not live 3000 miles distant 🙁

The paranoid in me asked: "Why is a pro-sound rental company selling its stock if there was nothing wrong with it?"

Folks in the San Frandiego part of CA may want to contact this (or similar) co's that rent out pricey speakers so you can blast them in your own home prior to buying 🙂 Sadly, such co's apparently do not exist in FL.

Now, if the devil wants to separate me from $6K, put a pair of SH-50's for sale in or near Tampa 🙂

could just be there just not "liked"(i know that sounds unlikely considering how revered Danley stuff is)
could also be the company convinced a client there system package was "better" and they are just clearing them out...
come on Soldermizer it's only money and you know you want them....

Maybe at 1/2 the price...

I probably won't buy this pair (although there is two hours left on the auction) 😀

Not to trash Danley speakers (me finally having heard some less than a month back...) but for a pair that is (approx.) $8K new, $6K used is not a super deal. The Wisc. seller got $4900 for his a few months back IIRC (I have an uncle not far from him, and I was sorely temped to have the senior citizen pick them up for me!) Everything depreciates, but DSL seems to hold its value pretty well, assuming in ok condition. Most things have depreciation issues, but you could say the same thing about (say) 1968 Plymouth Duster or a Vincent motorcycle, and they perhaps do not fit that stereotype 🙂

C'mon DSL, when are you going to come out with the SH-50 in choice of finsihes, hand-rubbed walnut or "paino gloss black" 😀
