Help repairing a NAD 5170 CD changer

I bought one of those for parts/repair deals off ebay thinking I might be able to get a usable CD player for cheap. The electronics seem to be in decent working order (panel lights up, tray ejects and loads properly, CD spins), but it will not play. I think the problem may be the mechanism that moves the laser along the CD, as it doesn't seem to be moving and the player can't seem to index the disc. I can't tell if the laser is on or not, as it's rather hidden behind the 5170's rather complex transport system. Anyone have ideas about how to go about repairing this?

also: If anyone has a service manual for this guy, I would really appreciate getting a copy of it.

lens is clean, but I took part of the changer assembly apart and put in a clear CD but did not see the laser turning on. I checked the ribbon going from one of the PCBs to the laser assembly and it looks fine. Any ideas as to what to do at this point?
