Help on buying Hypex UCD180HG amp

Hi,

I'm going to purchase a highend dac/preamp NAD m51.
I'm looking for a good sounding/value amp (and eco friendly if possible)
I have the opportunity to buy this Hypex UCD180HG amp

  1. Do you think the schema is good? (no soft-start, transformator and caps values..)
  2. The buyer specifies that he removes input capsto improve sound quality. Is it safe for the amp and speakers?
  3. What are the possible improvements ?
  4. The nad m51 has balanced XLR output. What modifications I have to do to make the hypex amp balanced? (other than xlr connectors ^^)
  5. For 250€ (300$ - 200£) is it a good deal? High-end enough for the nad?

Thanks

Hi mika91

1 - Can't answer this question. If the parts are UcD180HG, they are guenuine.
I've got an UcD180ST tweaked with LM4562 and no output caps. It sounds fine to me for the bass section (Bi-Amping). I've added a Trigger/Soft-start module fromù HCFR. But you can live without. Build a standard PSU too.
2 - If you're in trouble with that, you could solder them back.
3 - From what I know, UcD180 are balanced. Have a look at the Hypex website
4 - Seems to be, you've got a HiFi2000 chassis, connectors, 300VA toroid, trigger...

Have a look a the impedance of your targetted preamp vs UcD180HG.

Regards

Phil

Hi Mika,

I use the UcD180HG to drive my subwoofer.
Yes, I removed ( shorted ) the input caps, this was clearly audible on the subwoofer, deeper and better bass.
I also replaced the 2 small blue electrolytes with 100uf 25V low ESR types, these are decoupling/filter caps for the onboard powersupplies powering the input opamp.
