Help! New to RPi streaming and in over my head

It's certainly true that the Wifi hardware can make a big difference. I use a GL-MT330N mini router as a range extender, with a wired connection from that to the RPi.
That said, I would have given up on the RPi if I'd had to stick with Volumio.

If you want something that just works well from the start without a bunch of effort and fighting with it, I would NOT recommend an RPi streamer.

That tough? Wow!

1.Yes, you need to have Volumio installed on the USBridge. The phone is just used to view and control the player, which is accessed via an IP address on the phone's browser.
2.Balena Etcher is good, and it's free.
3.BubbleUPnP is an Android App. If you have an iPhone you may need to use Linn Kazoo, or Airplay as a last resort.

Thanks. We have Airplay but we have no android devices. We prefer iPads for browsing because we are both old with ageing eyes and prefer the larger screen of an iPad. Also, we tend to misplace our phones (and eyeglasses) a lot (we can call the phones from our landline to find them, but misplaced eyeglasses are a PITA).

That said, I would have given up on the RPi if I'd had to stick with Volumio.

So for the RPi, Moode is a better option?

Our internet connection is near where we expect to keep the streamer. Maybe we can just connect it via a wires switch instead of via Wifi.

the USBridge signature is based on the RPi 3 compute module isn't it?

Yes. It is supposed to be a purpose-built break-out board with an RPi3 compute module on it.

Hi,

I ran into this thread while looking for a solution. It is about the smallest and simplest thread on this topic.

Let me get this straight.

  1. I need Volumio on my USBridge Signature (I am using this instead of a Pi) AND on my phone?
  2. To get Volumio on my USBridge I need Balena Etcher to copy the software to an SD card?
  3. To use Tidal I need to install BubbleUPnP on my phone which somehow will connect to the Volumio on the USBridge?

Is this correct?

Did anyone try using an iPad instead of an iPhone? Does it work the same way? I want to use a tablet so we do not have to sacrifice our phones and the tablet is always available for both my wife and me to use.

Thanks.
Hi Navin. I am not familiar with the USBridge Signature but had a quick look at it on the Allo website. Really looks like an awesome product and solution. The Allo products have a very good reputation around here and I think one of their developers is also an active member (cdsgames) here.

If you are going to purchase the USBridge from Allo, you have the option to include the SD Card with software preloaded. Here you have a choice between DietPi, Volumio, Moode and Max2Play. If you take the SD Card (which I will strongly recommend) then you don’t have to use Balena Etcher to write the software to an SD Card, or even configure the software yourself.

I would also recommend that you email Allo and find out about streaming from Tidal. It might be that one of the software options supports Tidal streaming directly, then you don’t need BubbleUPnP. I have since moved on to using Moode which easily allows streaming from Spotify. I no longer need BubbleUPnP. I then use the Spotify app on my phone to stream via Moode on the RPi.

The use of iPad depends on the final software used, so I can't comment on that yet.

Hope it helps, but keep asking questions until you find a solution.

Hi, I've used Volumio and Moode, and while I like Moode there's a problem with it's reliability. Recently I've found that it takes up to 20 mins to get it running, sometimes I get error messages so it won't run. To be fair the Moode people are good to help, but help often comes in the form of a line of code. This is good for those familiar with code and programming, but I'm not. Iv'e used a tablet to control Tidal streaming, though Bubbleupnup isn't ideal for browsing and if Moode fails the stream is directed to the TV - Result: my wife comes from a different room complaining that there's music blasting over her favourite family drama. So Iv'e gone back to Volumio, I'll pay subscription and stream music on LAN.

In India too the Allo dealer offers a 120GB SD card with a choice between DietPi, Volumio, Moode and Max2Play.

In the end, I just want bug free software since I am not PC literate enough to figure out what went wrong and why.

I have written to Allo about streaming MQA from Tidal but have not received a response from them.

So Volumio works well but only wired. Moode accepts Wireless but is not reliable. Aaaah Hobson's choice.

Maybe Max2Play can do both, be reliable and work over wifi?

I've using an Allo USBridge Signature for over a year with Ropieee as my primary Roon bridge. Ropieee XL supports a bunch of other streaming protocols in addition to Roon. (I am not using XL)

RoPieee | XL

Ropieee and the Allo have proven to be quite reliable.

I also run Ropieee on a couple of RPI4B. I use WIFI to ethernet bridges rather than the internal WIFI and have found this to work extremely reliably on these units and use ethernet with the Allo.

I couldn't get mOode up and running. I'm no Software Engineer or network administrator, but I am a Mechanical Engineer and do consider myself pretty tech savvy. I started using a computer at age 4 in 1989, and was the go-to computer fixer in grade school. Whenever someone was having a computer problem, the science/computer teacher got me to fix it for her. I can usually figure out 99% of my daily IT issues on my own.

My point being, it's not that easy to figure this out. I've found the documentation on how to get any audio-streaming PiOS (other than Volumio) set up and running insufficient. If you're an programmer or have a lot of Raspberry Pi experience, you can probably figure it out, but neither of those are the case for me.

But I will try the RPi wired before I give up on it. If I still have issues I'll start saving for (and selling unused equipment to fund) a Node 2i. Unless someone has a better mOode startup guide than this one on the mOode forum moode/setup.txt at master * moode-player/moode * GitHub

It is as simple as this...🙂

1) go to the Moode Audio site and Download it.
moodeaudio.org

2) Download and use Etcher to burn it to a micro-sdCard
balenaEtcher - Flash OS images to SD cards & USB drives

3) Put the micro-sdCard into your Pi and boot with it connected to your network. Use wired ethernet to start as it is reliable.

4) from another pc on your network open a browser window and type in the network address of the Pi.

5) You're there ! With a graphical interface and can set your hardware and preferences.

6) Support forum for Moode is here..

Allo problems

Volumio or MoOde on USBridge, same issue.
Neither of them can automatically find my music files on my Imac (running Catalina). I know the Imac ip address, and I have the path name to my music folder , but I cannot get anything to mount. Internet radio works fine, but I want to use my Itunes music.
I didn't think I was a complete idiot, but it seems I need my hand held and a detailed 1, 2, 3 step to correctly load my existing music folders.
Thank you in advance.

It would help if you can be a bit more detailed in your setup... How are you sharing your files to rpi? what guide are you using to setup shared folder and to connect it on rpi? there should be no need in using anything other network share on imac and you connect that share in rpi...

after some quick reading there is obviously a lot of problems with network sharing in Big Sur...

Thanks jonners and Ripster for replying.
As best I can, am following the instructions as offered by Volumio (or MoOde). Software is loaded into my Allo USBridge Signature, then accessed via volumio.local via wired ethernet.
Auto scanning for my music discovers nothing, so I am attempting to add Network Drive.
I'm getting the ip address from my router, then copying the itunes folder path. Can't tell if it mounts properly, but still no access to my music on my Imac.

I would LOVE to follow a detailed guide for using an rpi with mac+big sur, but alas, I have not found any. I am not comfortable making any terminal commands.
Clearly, I am missing a step (or two), but nothing has been obvious, nor simple from my perspective. Pinkfloyd4ever couldn't figure it out either, and he sounds more savvy than myself.

Thank you for thinking of solutions on my behalf; it is appreciated.
