Hi everyone, I just got this cdp-102 today and took it apart to grease everything cause it was sluggish opening the tray.
I took everything apart, put it back together, and it opened great, but suddenly it's dead, and it won't spin discs.
This makes no sense, as an hour ago it was reading tracks just fine, and playing perfectly. I'm so confused and frustrated, somebody please help, the motor jerks when I turn it off and on as if showing life, and the lens moves up and down, but nothing happens beyond that.

Use a recommended lens cleaner.
I use a bit of cotton wool on a forceps, dipped in alcohol, a proper camera / spectacle lens cleaner is preferable.
Be gentle, do not scratch it.

Tried this, no luck. I also reseated connectors but still nothing.Try cleaning the lens. It may have picked up some stray grease.
I think I might
Have fried the laser somehow while tampering with the mechanism. It turns on and just clicks two times and then nothing happensCheck PSU voltages against the service manual, maybe re-seat connectors.
Or perhaps the spindle motor somehow got fried, this just makes no sense for it to suddenly stop functioning.Check PSU voltages against the service manual, maybe re-seat connectors.
It is a Sony, those things have sometimes 'unique' designs, which seem eccentric to others.
It is best to check the motors, and the voltages, then search for threads in this and other sites before doing something which might cause further damage.
The operating sequence is usually it checks for a disk with the laser, then the spindle spins (or the other way)? Please verify then continue service work.
An oscilloscope might just be handy, bear that in mind, the older models sometimes sell as scrap, in good condition.
A new or used mechanism may be a direct transplant, I bought used DVD writers for about $5 some years back, about a third of new price...think about that as well.
