HELP - my DIY shiva rattles / clacks !

I have just completed (I thought) a 54L sealed box with a 250W plate amp and a Shiva driver. I wired the two voice coils in parallel (2 8 ohm coils for a 4 ohm load), and attached the driver to the front baffle to try it out.

When it hits a low bass note (like in Avril Levigne's skaterboy) the thing sounds like it's rattling or sheet metal is clacking or something... bottom line - something is definately not right. What causes this type of thing?

I think the box is sealed really tight.

It sounds like a crappy car sub rattling sheet metal (no offense car audio guys)

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how I can fix this?

if it does this at low volumes, it is likely defective. I had this problem in my Rava, and had to send it back for a new one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news if this is indeed the case, I feel your pain, believe me, I did NOT enjoy waiting another 6 weeks to get the new one 😡

A properly working sealed shiva does not clack like its bottoming out at low volumes. I can drive my Rava to uncomfortable volumes without this happening. I'd shoot off an email to Adire or whatever dealer you bought it from.

Subsonic filter needed?

I have one easy listening jazz CD that produce really low frequence.. it must be below 10Hz but no way of knowing with no test equipments. Itl caused my driver reaching its max excursion too even with no music passage. When I set the active crossover with the low cut from 25hz down everthing is fine. So now I don't listen to that CD anymore because I do not like to use the filter. Just want to share my similar experience. Hope your drivers are ok. Or check the mounting bolts for sure..

If you can cycle the cone in and out by hand, and not hear any rubbing the driver is probaly ok.

You need to test around the driver and amp for air leaks. Sealed boxes must be COMPLETELY airtight or they'll make weird noises at higher SPLs

Is this one of the plate amps that has built in bass boost? If so defeat it.

Couple more experiments since my last post...

I took the driver out of the enclosure and just held it in my hands by the rim while this track played... same clacking rattling-sheet-metal noise as before - so it's definately NOT the box. Then I wiring each of the voice coils individually one at a time - same disappointing result.

I'm guessing that it's defective. I'll be calling or emailing adire today.

Not an encouraging result on the first speaker of any kind that I've ever attempted to build... 🙁
