Ground channel amplifier

Ground channel amplifier 🙂 (gain =1) is very good idea in spilt battery system (+,GND,-). The Most advance is 50%/50% supply split in all battery capacity/charge conditions. So the DC-offset do not vary during batteries are run out. It is must in DC-coupled headphone output. Remembe headphones do not like DC current 🙁

- I don't think class AB sounds so bad. Correctly done, it sounds quite decent. Good enough at least so that other priorities such as battery lifetime, compatibility with many cans, weight and so on can enter the design list. In my list, for sennheiser 300ohms cans, a voltage swing of 5v peak-to-peak is a real minimum, in order to get the most linear first volts of voltage swing. Actually, I'm also not sure we're doing it for sound quality alone... the itch to build new stuff is always there. 😉 A valid reason to build something different to the opamp+buffer stuff I've done so many times already.

- I don't see the point about CDPs or DAP not going above 2Vrms outputs. Don't forget your amp can have some gain...

- I don't think either that discrete jfets sound grainy or fatiguing at all ! Ask Pass, Borbely or Gilmore what they think. But neither do I think that bipolar opamps sound really better compared to fet ones.

All this being said, if you consider it's thread hijacking, I'll stay out starting now 😱

So is this and a lot less complex than a complete amplifier.

Of course class AB doesn't sound bad, but there's something special about class A.

I was just trying to say, I don't need a lot of voltage. When using a unity gain buffer for my CDP (2 V maximum output), the soundpressure is enough for me. I always listen without eq. So you see I don't need more than 2 V, transients or not, the signal amplified or not. Sometimes a low signal needs to be amplified, but I don't think I ever listen louder than 2 maybe 3 Volts. When using my DAP with 1 V output, I sometimes need amping, and that's why I wanted an amp such as this.

As I said, I'm not sure of my findings. I have some JISBOS board waiting to be populated, and I already have a stripboard JISBOS playing (and burning😉 ) in my pocket right now. When I finish this all bipolar amp, I'll do some serious comparisons to be wiser - if there is a JFET and a bipolar sound.

All this being said, if you consider it's thread hijacking, I'll stay out starting now 😱
No, not at all. I think this is what these boards are all about. We all want to get a little wiser by the input from others. Please continue to say what you're thinking. I'm eagerly awaiting your JFET input amp. I've also been thinking of something like this with a class AB output stage driven by a single 9 V for maximum portability.

This looks interesting, I'm going to try it in the only 2 ch amp I have. When I converted it from active to passive ground, the soundstage got less precise, and it sounds more distorted in all. But this is a very messy prototype amp (the JISBOS-buffer amp mentioned above). Now I use center battery point as virtual ground and two rather small electrolytics from rails to ground.

And Nico, I've just read your mails, I'll get back to you hopfully tonight. I've been at my in-laws all day.
