Help identifying a device

Picked up and Altec 436 a while back and this component was in the rack with it. It's homemade. There's gauges and knobs on the front, jacks on the back and transformers inside. Don't know what it is. A mic preamp? I know the folks here know what it is, when it was made and what kind of solder was used. Thanks for the help.

At a guess it is a distribution amplifier. Righthand knobs seem to control input level, which feed a chip amp, that then feeds a buss to all the output level controls with VU on each and finally through seperately transformer isolated outputs. Come outputs are jacks, some XLRs. Other trimpots may be for level optimisation. It is obviously custom made for a specific application. One possibility is a 'broadcast splitter' which is a box to split audio from a PA system to several radio or TV reporters, so that you don't get a bird's nest of microphones on the podium. In the 1980's we built our own because it wasn't something you could buy off the shelf. Broadcast splitter
