Hey everyone, Just picked this old amp up on ebay cheap (the chassis looks really retro and cool) any idea's what it is? I was thinkign of reuseing the chassis and makeing a 6L6 PP Guitar amp on it or something similar... But that depends.. mabey it would be worth restoreing.. what do you think?

By the look of the connector on the front (if that's what it is, an old-style mic connector) and on the rear, it looks like an outboard modulator for a transmitter of some sort.

as i said, i bought it on ebay fairly cheap (under £20) There is a label on it that you can see in the photo's, it reads "power amp chassis ex village hall projector built in preamp 30 watt output" and the guy said that he's pretty sure it is designed for 110V (why 110V in the uk? mabey it was imported at some stage?)

Some projectors (Bell & Howell, Pathe, Gaumont, I think, and probably others) were built to run on 110V, and took their power from a large transformer, so the amps were designed accordingly.
I think the original idea (apart from easy conversion to UK mains) was to do with 110V lamps being more efficient than 240V due to their having a shorter filament.
You'll probably have to do some tweaking to provide a line-level input, as the main i/p will be designed for a photocell.

i'm not sure if i will be keeping the amp as is atall to be honest, i just like the look of the chassis and there are probably many other usefull components in it aswell, i was thinking of makeing a nice PP 6L6GT based guitar amp on the chassis.. i might restore it and modify it to line level BUT i don't know what valves it was designed to use and being 110V i think i'd be better of just useing the chassis and building my own amp into the chassis..

The amp arrived today, it's very well built. and to my surprise i removed the cover on the back to find a nice set of mullard valves (2x ef40 and 1x ecc40) thel look to be pretty old mullard tubes aswell.. There are 4 sockets on the top of the amp for a gz32 and 3x el37.. The amp has mic and gram inputs on the frone (via old style mic sockets) and there was a screened cable added at some point that came through the front pannel but this has been cut of, it looks pretty nice inside with a large choke and an output transformer mounted inside the chassis. so.. what shall i do with it? the chassis is pretty nice.. first thing my dad said when he saw it is that it looks military..it looks pretty cool 🙂

is it truye that the EL37 is the european equivalent of a 6L6?? i just read it on the web, if this is the case then the amp is basically a 6L6 PP amp.. but i dont understand the 3rd 6L6? mabey it isnt PP and it is parallell SE? or mabey they are useing a 6L6 as phase splitter or something? :S
